I got in on the first SC batch before they had the firm foam, but I think the soft foam is ideal for me. Question though, D, since you've got the SC seat and have used the sheep skin cover on the OEM seat.

Would you think for what deficiencies the SC seat has for me once I get above 300 miles and the first tank or two of gas and my arse starting to get "that feeling", would a sheep skin pad from Alaska Leather, or someone similar, augment the huge improvement SC already brings to the plate?

Never used any pad at all before, so just wondering if it'd be a wise investment for those days when long slab is required to get from point A to B. Seats are as subjective for folks as windshields, but your thoughts would be a good starting point.

Karson, for those long stab days, an easy on/off type of fix would be an Airhawk. Put the seat in low position, slap on the Airhawk and you should be at about the same height. I used an Airhawk on my Shadow (with Corbin gel pack seat) and it worked wonders. Could ride all day! ::008::

To be honest, Karson...

I haven't used my sheepskin pad (oddly enough, from Alaska Leather, and that I've had since I had my '02 BMW R1150R) with the Seat Concepts saddle. I did use it a couple of times with the Cee Baileys but found it unnecessary with it. I've gone 450 miles in a day on the Seat Concepts so far with no discomfort whatsoever...

Of course, I've gone over 600 miles in a day with the Cee Baileys and no issues, either. I went 900 in a day on the stock seat once, but I'd never say there was "no discomfort" on that jaunt!!! :D

With the stock seat I found the sheepskin pad added about 200 to 250 miles in a day to my trip mileage before any real issues cropped up, but so far both the Cee Baileys and the Seat Concepts have been good enough I haven't felt the need to bring the sheepskin along. That said, the biggest improvement I've found the past couple of years in seat time/mileage improvement has been chucking cotton shorts and going with dedicated synthetic riding shorts or padded synthetic bicycle shorts. You may not believe this, but my current favorite right now are from "Cycle Gear", and they're called "Heat Out" base layer riding shorts (http://www.cyclegear.com/CycleGear/Street/Base-Layers/Bottoms/brand/HEAT-OUT/Base-Layer-Riding-Shorts/p/41710_59409_199). They're extremely cool in hot weather and warm enough in chilly weather, and they simply eliminate any chaffing or hot spots from sitting for mile after mile. I have 3 or 4 pair, and so far they've held up great for two riding seasons, but the best thing is they are so cheap that if you need to replace it doesn't sting your wallet! Another bonus is that they dry in literally minutes, so on trips you can wash 'em, hang 'em up, and they're dry and ready to go in just an hour or so.

Dedicated riding shorts have been a much greater improvement for me than the sheepskin. That said, I will try to make a point to use the sheepskin pad my next ride with the Seat Concepts saddle and get you some feedback.

On another note, I know some folks swear by 'em, but I have tried Airhawk's over the years and have never cared for them. I'm sure it's just me, but in my experience they give me a very *disconnected* feel on the bike, and that's something I just don't like. Even when I tried them aired way down I got that feeling. I liked to feel *connected* to the bike, even through the seat-of-my-pants. Again, just my two centavos... No more.

Dallara - I've heard over and over again how bicycle shorts or dedicated riding shorts makes a big difference. I tried a set of bicycle shorts once, but it didn't work for me. But maybe it was just the ones I tried.

I've done a few long days with the S10, the stock seat, IMO, isn't bad for a stock seat. Though I found the Tiger 1050 seat to be better. I am definitely looking at the Seat Concepts seat, but I have been waiting until they have one for both the rider and the passenger. Looks like that just recently happened. I may pull just the trigger and make it happen.

Wondering out loud if Seat Concepts has a lower version of the seat kit for the Super Ten. I have the kit and it is as tall as the regular seat in the upper position while it is in the low position. It makes the bike just a bit too tall for comfort.

I have other SC seats and love them, especially on my KLX250SF. What a transformation.

I like the way the seat removes the tilt, but it is just too tall for me. Any help out there?

Thanks-

Rob

Rob - they're always on google chat and I've pinged them re: specific questions in the past. I'm sure if you give them a hollar over the phone and ask if they can take an 1" off or something, they'd do that for a nominal charge (since it's a deviation from a normal production run).

I could be 100% completely wrong since they probably have a specific mold for these seats, but maybe they have tricks up their sleeve to shave the foam a little for ya.

Check out the Seat Concepts website, and look under the "coming soon" section of the Tenere seat page. They say they have a low version in the works.

[EDIT: Looks like Rotortech71 already posted this info. I didn't see it until I'd sent this up. My apologies!]

Looks like "Seat Concepts" is just about to have the *low* seat option you're looking for, Rob. Click on this link for their web site main page:

http://www.seatconcepts.com/

And then look at the column on the left where it says "Coming Soon". There, ninth item down, it says "Super Tenere Low kit and Complete seat".

I'd drop 'em a line and see how they're coming on that option.

Hope this helps!

For those of you who installed your own, do you NEED a pneumatic stapler, or will a quality manual stapler get the job done?

A question regarding the sargent...
I hear its firm, but does it have pressurepoints, or it just give you a numb behind all round? I ask, because this stock saddle is getting up my nose. Why do they design a bike and then stop, just before they get to the seat. The people who makes them must weigh 50.

They are Japaneses!!

But so are Sumo Wrestlers. :D

While technically a Japanese national now, Konishiki is Hawaiian.

I still bet Konishiki would go for the "firm foam" option... ;)

I'd say pneumatic and actually just put my S10 foam and covers on last night.
This is the fifth cover I've installed and I wouldn't do it without one. The guns are cheap so if you have an air compressor I wouldn't hesitate to pick one up. I also use a Surebond 9600 which is a cheap but functional gun. Saying that it won't last forever (I'm on my second) so if you want a stapler that will take a lot of use and last for years you may be pushing it with the Surebond.

I also have a nice manual and an electric stapler used for other projects over the years and neither one does a very good job when putting a seat cover on. Can it be done? Sure but it's going to be a frustrating process and you'll be pulling a lot of half seated staples.

Side note - the new gripper cover looks good compared to the prior versions and is very close to the stock covers feel. The rear seat foam is also really nice and I can't wait to get feedback from my wife on how it is. It's a couple inches wider and should do a much better job of keeping her comfortable.

Thanks for that. Pneumatic stapler it is then. Could you post a pic of your seat? I just ordered the same combo last night.

Color is off as this was shot in the garage but you'll get an idea of the textures. The passenger seat isn't on the bike right now errr yet...
