SatNav mounted on handlebars

Having read numerous posts about wobbling/vibration when folks have mounted a satnav on the bar above the clocks... I decided to mount my new 590 Garmin on a ram ball which replaces one of the four handlebar clamp bolts.....Just done a 600 mile trip and it worked just fine, with the only issue being a limit on the angle you can set the satnav using a short ram arm.....

So just spent 20 minutes in the garage scratching my head... and with a spare ram arm I've taken a chunk out of one of the cups.. which has now enabled me to angle the satnav down a lot more than I could.... I'd say it's at about 75 degrees now.. and easy to glance at... and rock solid ;)

The second view is roughly from eye level when sat on the bike... third shows the chunk I've taken out

There is an easy fix for the vibration of the stock GPS holder, and it is, IMO, a better place (more in road sight, is not hidden by a tank bag, and well protected in you fall off road) but there is nothing wrong using RAM system like you did.

I had seen the mod on the other thread.....Does it affect the adjustability of the screen? I've got wind deflectors fitted also ... so that could make a difference. I don't do off road so am rarely standing up, except to stretch .
You folks over the pond have it good with all the open space and dirt roads 8)

I had no issues with the satnav mounted on the bars on the trip I've just completed.... but the mod is another option if I decide I want to move it ::003::

Bryn, I copied Calliou's idea and it works really well, I also have winglets fitted and they don't interfere with the installation

I have extra pics. P.M me your email and I'll send them if you want :)

My Garmin 590 is mounted on the windshield rail I ditched the Ram-mount stuff and went for a bracket that is attached to the Garmin and clamps directly to the Bar.

http://www.gadgetguy.net/Catalog/11/BasePlateII.html

The ram-mount gear added to a lot of the vibration/bounciness, while the GPS still has some movement it is tolerable and makes for better viewing of the GPS.

I had thought about shoring up the rail with some struts but honestly i can't be bothered with the effort when on the tarmac the GPS doesn't shake much at all now, and when off road i generally only look at the GPS when stopped.

On my 2012 I had my 660 mounted to the handlebar clamp but it kept loosening up. I ended up using the RAM 1" Ball Mirror Mount http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/ram-mounts-mirror-mount-base . The mirrors have not loosened up on the 2012 or the 2015. The big plus is the GPS is easier to read. I use the same mount on the other mirror for a SPOT, X-Grip, or ???

Same here. I had the same set up as yours and I never regretted the decision. I'm using my trusty Galaxy Note 4 mounted on a ram mount finger frip.

I used to have the gps mount from Sw motech but i just couldn't stand the vibrations. Plus, its quite a reach to my phone.

It takes awhile to get used to especially when you have to lower your head more to look at the set as compared to the previous location.
