Okay so this isn't S10 related but.........

I just got a quote for a new up to date SD Navigation card for my Audi Q3, it will cost £206.00 inc taxes ??? but wait......that's not all....there's an activation code requirement which is to be conducted by my dealer, the charge for which is extra ...NO... I didn't ask how much that was cos basically I'd had enough laughs for one day ::007::

So bike specific sat navs some with Lifetime updates suddenly seem like good value :)

I always forgo the factory nav system in cars. The Garmins are cheap to buy, usually free to update, can be used in all your vehicles including rental cars (I travel for business regularly) and in my experience are more accurate.

Most car systems are crap - they just look nice & are said to enhance re-sale...........but at quite some cost. And..... invariably, they are yet another distraction for the driver, along with phones/social media/text readers/ICE. All this seems to be getting more important than looking out through the windscreen or remembering to put the car's lights on at dusk.

My wife's Freelander 2 (aka LR2) system, although having up-to-date discs, is just horrid; very clunky. My SLK, with HDD Comand OnLine, had it's software updated in August, but has no touch screen - still uses a navigator wheel. For the previous owner this was a £2245 option can you believe. It's logic seems better than the Land Rover, but that is hardly a recommendation.

So we keep my BMW NavIV (aka Garmin 660) with lifetime map updates on hand if we need reasonable accuracy, to switch between cars & bikes. The Garmin has it's moments, particularly if it decides to amend the route right in the middle of a complex junction, but is liveable with. Sad to say, we still carry & check out routes on a map - maybe it's an age thing?

Ride Safe ................... KEN

As Squibb mentioned, and not really answering the OP's question, but on the my BMW, it has the latest HUD and voice command, which after a little practice works really well, also also me to 'read' texts while on the move, it actually reads them out! Not that I get any of course, ho hum! So yes they are an added distraction, but worth every penny in an unfamiliar large city with lots of traffic. Necessary evil!

Watch out for "Lifetime Updates", Garmin mean the life of the system according to Garmin, after a few years you will find your device can no longer be recognised and cannot be updated.

My guess is depending how new the model your "lifetime" updates are more likely to be 3-5 years Max, I got caught with this and have a Garmin that is only about 5 years old but cannot be updated anymore.

My zumo 550 is still updateable with the lifetime maps. Garmin has ceased support for firmware upgrades however. It's probably 8 or 9 years old
