Hi Guys,

My S10 is too big for a 34 mile long by 2 mi. wide island. Too much traffic and idiot taxis. I keep it on the mainland for 1-2 week trips to the mountains on (mostly) paved roads. However, I need practice on dirt roads and there are plenty here on Roatan. So am thinking of something smaller, that I can pick up fairly easily... with good ground clearance. A rear pass. seat would be nice. Has to be Yamaha. Am 72, 6'2", 175# with 32 inseam and 35 in. reach. Saw a XT250 the other day at my dealer and liked it. There have to be other choices, so please help. I never rode on dirt and am apprehensive on the S10 with 2 up when doing so. The dirt roads on the mainland are hard pack dirt and round river rocks. There are always some 2 in. to 4 in. round or oval smooth stones on the surface and I am afraid of them. They pop out if the tire hits them directly and it alters the direction of my front wheel. Scary (to me). However, for practice sake, the dirt roads here on the island do not have round river rocks (no rivers), but more of the usual stone from jagged to flat to squarish. An old timer once told me to practice on a dirt bike to build skill. Make sense? Thoughts?

Okay. Your turn. Appreciate any advice you can lend. Would like to pick something up within a few weeks.

Thanks,
Scott

If you're set on getting a smaller bike and liked the XT, I would check out the Honda CRF250L. The XT was a decent bike in 1987, but for what it costs, not worth it, IMO.

Yamaha WR250R. The perfect compliment to the S10. Do a search on this forum and you'll find that a large number of the members have both bikes.

Well, the fine print said it HAD to be a Yamaha, but other than their 250, you really don't have much of a choice. The DRZ400S would be MY choice in your situation.

WR250 is the go to small displacement DS bike. Just as powerful as the DR-Z400, but much more refined and off-road capable.

Thanks Fellas,

A lot depends on the # of dealerships around. Yamaha #1 and Honda #2. All others are far distant, trust me. Will see if dealers have a CRF250L and/or a WR250R in stock. Both of these sounded good when I read some reports last night. Am inclined to think I would want a taller bike with higher CG to best practice for the S10 offroad. The XT250 might be easier, as it is lower, but may not give me the confidence level I am striving for. The 250 size and weight are perfect for this island. Most locals are using 125 and 150's. 30-40 mph top speed here.....maybe 50 to pass someone, but you will be slowing down in a minute or so.

Many thanks for your input, guys. Appreciate it.

Sincerely,
Scott

I'd definitely go with a small bike like the 250, preferably a decent used one cheap. (You will drop it!) Bikes like the s10 are fantastic motorcycles BUT they are heavy and can quickly become a handful in rough terrain (like the 2-4 inch rocks you describe) I've ridden since '67, used to race Motocross and have beaucoup miles on a variety of motorcycles, but I would also be concerned about riding the S10 on these roads. PLEASE wear protective gear-those rocks will hurt... Ride safe and good luck!

With those driving speeds a Yamaha TW200 comes to mind. 55 mph top speed, geared to crawl over trails, easy one-person pickup.

No used 250's around at all. Just used 125's or 150's. Would have bought the CRF250l Honda if the dealer had one. Six months to get the Honda shipped here from Japan. Yuk! Same with the WR250r Yamaha. None in the country. So I bought the XT250 off the showroom floor. With 20-40 mph usual speeds on paved roads here, this model will do just fine, and give me some good practice on numerous dirt roads on the island. 150 BIG bikes will be here on Roatan this weekend for our annual bike fest. All brands coming from all over Central America. Not much riding, but will be hitting some really nice spots and BBQ's.

Thanks for all your good input!

Best Regards,
scott Williams
