Everyone... You have to understand, the rates are different for the areas you live in. If someone lives in the boonies of Ohio the rate will be different for someone in the city of Los Angles or New York. You need to find the best rate for your state and county.
Hope this helps...
Thanks Jim. But to be honest, I was just whining. You are right. Motorcycle insurance is high in AZ cause there's a lot of bikers and a lot of bikers getting crunched year round.

So true Japako!

If you live in Houston, you can have some of the highest auto/cycle rates in the whole country.

If you move just south of Houston in the adjacent "rural" county, you get some of the lowest rates in the country.

Back in 2001 I purchased and financed (rare for me on motorcycles) a GSX750R at a dealer in Harris County. (Houston proper) Thus I was required to have full coverage by Suzuki finance. The finance lady at the dealership also worked up an insurance quote. She kept thinking the quote was wrong and that the software was in error. I finally asked "is it that bad?"

She said "No, it's not that. It's the opposite. I have never seen a quote so low"

I explained that she just isn't used to selling GSXR's to fat old men with a clean driving records that own, instead of rent, and live in the country.

By the way, it was ~$600.00

If I was 18 years old and lived in Houston it could have been as high as $9000.00!!!
More than the bike cost at the time!

I did some research and discovered my health insurance would cover my medical costs in the event I was injured on the ST. My Progressive policy also had a "total loss" coverage which I did not need. When I dropped the medical coverage (uninsured motorist) and the total loss coverage, my policy went from 130 a month to 40 dollars a month. Huge difference. I was paying a lot of money for double coverage. I verified if my bike is damaged/destroyed by an uninsured or under-insured driver the comprehension and collision portion will cover it. I put enough of a down payment that I am nowhere near upside down on it. My medical is covered by my health insurance which is pretty good, I just pay co-pays on doctor and hospital visits. I also have a lot of life insurance.

Just thought I would pass this info along in this insurance thread for others to review and comment on.

I'm in a similar boat here, have USAA for all my insurance except the bike. Weird the amount of service people who own bikes but USAA will no longer cover them. Also being 45 and a clean record my Progressive rates (after using them for about 6 years now only for my bikes) is down to under $300/year with $0 deductibles.

I also do not have uninsured/under insured coverage but may add that on as I (my wife actually) was in an accident 2 years ago this July. She was hit head-on by a distracted driver, luckily (I think) she was working for the Census at the time and all of her medical is covered by Federal Workers Comp. But, when it came to liability (and pain/suffering) we could only collect the limits of the policy (in PA), we have un/under stacked on our 2 cars which is what we received from USAA (who then is going after the other driver). If we did not have that extra coverage we would have gotten absolutely nothing, zip, zero, after 4 months at Univ of Pennsylvania Hospital, another 4 months in a Rehab Hospital and the past 16 moths of PT all because the other drive was 'supposedly' looking for something in his glove box and crossed 2 lanes. Add the fact that he was 24 and lived at home and had no assets we had nothing to go after. That extra USAA uninsured/underinsured (and stacked for both our cars) was a gift that helped us get by.

I hate paying out and getting no perceived value, but when it came to needing it, I am glad we had the extra insurance. Go cheap now to save a few bucks but it could cost you a whole lot more later on.

We have USAA for everything else also, so this really irks me to have to buy MC insurance from someone else. Your point is well taken on the un/uninsured coverage. I am electing to go without it for now. Sorry to hear about your wife. I just worked an accident Sunday where a driver went across the center line and an additional on-coming lane to hit another vehicle head on. 32 year old driver. His toxicology results were all negative. We can only guess he was texting or doing something else. He was knocked silly so he doesn't remember anything.

I know there are a lot of different variables depending on where you are at, seems odd that there is such a LARGE discrepancy though. I have been using State Farm practically forever, with full coverage for me it is only just over $300/year for the Tenere and right at $300/year for my FJR.

Does that include any medical coverage for yourself?

No medical additions which could account for a lot of the difference.......don't have to include it since it is one of those lovely active duty military benefits that I have

My State Farm coverage includes everything...medical, collision, comprehensive, towing, rental reimbursement, etc, etc. The most deductible I would pay is $250 for collision, none for comp. I am 40, but I have been with the same agent since I was 16 and bought my first bike at 18 (89 EX 500 brand new and insured for only $22/month for the same coverage I have now basically). My 99 Blackbird for the same coverage was $28/month, and the Tenere is only $33/month ($396 annually) I live in the Norfolk/Va Beach area of VA and there are TONS of bikes in the area due to the high Navy pop. ...mostly squids on crotch rockets.

I had to use my mc insurance one time back in 91 and my coverage went up about two bucks /month when I almost totaled my EX. Other than that, I have all my other insurance through them (2 cars, homeowners, personal articles, etc...everything except my Landscape business ins which is Nationwide). I recently looked at switching to Nationwide, and the Bike alone was almost $1300/year. And, to this date, I have no idea why there is such a huge difference in the cost between companies....?!?!?!?

As others have stated, not only the geographical location of the S10 but how the insurance company itself rates the bike. I think the model "Super Tenere" with 1300 cc may be the cause of some of the high sport bike type ratings. I use Progressive but I know that there are too many variables to compare rates from county to couynty as well as credit ratings and driving records. Having multible bike reduces the S10 insurance pain. When I had my 2009 Wee Strom DL650A, I never understood why the insurance for the 2009 650 cc was more than my 2008 FJR. Only thing you can do is shop around but sometimes the best deal is not the best answer, especially when it comes to claims.

Yeah, the insurance business is hard to understand. I have had State Farm for almost 50 years on my cars, homeowners, and bikes. I now have Nationwide on my Super Tenere and it is 1/3 the rate that State farm wanted for the same coverage.

I have to relay my recent experience with State Farm. I had Allstate for my S10 and their rate jumped big time (up to almost $700/yr). So I start shopping. State Farm came out the best at $372/yr. Book 'em Danno! Three weeks later I get a nasty-gram from the corporate office of State Farm saying my insurance wlll be cancelled because I don't have my auto policy with them. What!?!?! First, the spineless agent didn't have the stones to tell me himself (cuz it was his screw up that caused this mess). Second, State Farm apparently will not hesitate to kick a new customer to the curb over a lousy 6 month policy. I fulfilled by obligation by paying for 6 month's coverage in advance. Right or wrong, State Farm should fulfill their obligation by honoring the policy, It will be a dark day before I do business with this company again. I expect at least an attempt at integrity and State Farm has none. ::007::

So, switched to Farmers where I have my auto and home. Paying $486/yr. Not the absolute cheapest, but pretty close. My agent is a great guy and rides dirt bikes with his kids. He's begging me to stop by so he can check out the beast. He keeps reading about Teneres in Cycle World, but has never gotten close to one in person.

That is funny merchant, as I only have my bike with State Farm, and rest cars, house is with Safeco. My issue with state farm is I hear you guys getting insurance from them for under $400 a yr, where as mine here is just shy of $800 / yr full coverage.

That's too funny.. I have my autos and house with SF and could have put the bike with them. The price was around 480, but the coverage was not the same as Nationwide and they would not go higher..

Just opened the SF policy notice before I walked in to the computer -- $284.71 / year for 250/500/100 liability, comprehensive, and collision with a $250 deductible on all of the above. Keep in mind though, I have car, house, etc with them as well, a pretty much clean driving record and no accidents and have been with them for 25+ years.

Sorry for blowing up on State Farm and thanks for letting me vent. Initially I was a little bent (could you tell?), but after more conversation with the SF agent it is clear he made an honest mistake that the parent company couldn't live with. He was great about recommending other carriers and even offered to back date the termination of the policy in order to refund more of my premium. In terms of dollars, barely amounts to a cup of coffee but the effort was made. I don't like how it all came down, but there was no ill intent.
