I did a search, but could not find a specific thread concerning S10 fuel consumption on this site.

It would be good to keep a record of what fuel consumption others are getting for different riding conditions.

E.g. fuel consumption (L/100km or US MPG) according to on-board computer at:

A. Sustained highway speeds (110 - 140 km/h indicated)
B. Country road driving (70-110 km/h indicated)
C. Mixed (all speeds, city, HWY, country)

If none of the above apply to you, just state your own conditions ;)

I have noted that the computer calculated fuel consumption is about 0.4L/100km optimistic when I refill.

I have started commuting for the season and my week consists of a 150km highway ride on Mondays and Fridays (110-140 km/h indicated), then also mixed riding during the week. The total is about 660km per week. When I get the chance I give it a good old twist of the wrist, but otherwise kind of calm riding because there are too many cops around. This week my average fuel consumption according to the computer is 4.7L/100km (50.5 US MPG), which probably corresponds to 5.1L/100km (46.5 US MPG) actual. I keep the bike in sports mode all the time. This strikes me as pretty good for a 1200cc, 261kg bike. Also think that my fuel consumption has improved compared to last autumn when the bike was brand new.

Wow! If I could get that kind of U.S. fuel mileage out of this bike, I'll be most happy. Before ordering mine, that was what I kept teetering back and forth with because this bike will be my sole transportation. ^-^

Thanks for posting the thread and your mileage. It's always amazing the different reports that come in as there are so many variables. I'm just hoping for something close to what I get on my FJR - or perhaps a little better to offset the increased cost of running premium over regular.

That sounds pretty good to me since my carburated Concours struggled to get 40 mpg.

This is part of the reason I wanted to start this thread because some of the reviews have slammed the S10 with "lousy" fuel consumption. Based on my experience it seems like for practical every day road use mid-40's mpg should be a reasonable expectation. Last autumn when the bike was new and I was out playing with it I was seeing as high as 5.6 to 5.8 L/100kms on the readout (probably around 38 to 40 US MPG in reality). These play sessions involved testing top speed amongst other things...

Also understand that this thread can only really be answered by non-US residents at this time.

Yes, the tuning will be much different for our (the US) market and I strongly suspect our mileage (and overall performance) to be lower.

RMac,

All the real world experience comes in at between 4.5L/100km to 6.5L/100km. The European tests seem to bagging the bike out for things that just don't exist in the real world. If you are on an actual big trip you can get 400-450km per tank on sealed roads if you have to without trying too hard.
A recent test in Australia took a GS (not GSA) S10, MTS1200 and F800GS out and about for a few days and remarked that the fuel consumption didn't vary much between bikes 5.04L/100 for the F800 to 6.4L/100km for the S10. (an equal mix of single lane tracks, up and down gnarly hills and some highway). The S10 works out having the most range of the group in the end, because it had the largest tank.

Cheers
Graham

I'm thinking that they had quite a lot of fun during that test if the S10 pulled an average 6.4L/100km ;)

I suspect the same but also wonder about fuel quality here in the US compared to the rest of the world. In fact, fuel cost has never been the reason I ride in the first place.

Recently I did about 1600 km in two days. I did 0 out the computer and at the end of the journey it showed 6.5 lt/100 km averaged. On straith aways I have seen 220kmh .My buddy had a GS and he did 5.9 lt average. FYI

Turk,
Were you in "touring" mode or "sport" mode?

I think 2/3 i was on touring mode. I don't really thing it makes much of a difference on fuel consumption. Some times I look at the instant fuel consumption and if you less then 120 kmh it show around 5lt. but if you go over 160-180 kmh its around 10-12 lt. I like the bike but the fuel consumption is not the best future of this bike. Especially here in TUrkey . The unleaded gas is around $2.73/lt or around $10 gallon. So my friends who complain about gas prices in the US should know how lucky they are.

We have been spoiled by low gas prices for a very long time. Some of that is due to a different tax structure. Regardless I wonder what $10per gallon gas prices would do to people's driving habits?

Driving habits would change. Mostly walking or mass transit. :( It would be a lifestyle change, for sure.

I know it would change mine A LOT. The increase over the last 6 months has all ready affected my driving habits some. I wish that my Honda Pilot would get the same MPG as my previous Honda CR-V!!! :)

In the tests I read those using Touring mode commented on the low fuel consumption and those using the sport mode said it was thirsty? I know the Concours uses different maps to conserve fuel, I wonder if the touring mode is an economy map?

We don't know for sure, but I don't think we have any hard data that indicates the modes do anything insofar as fuel maps - just electronic throttle cams and damping. And I haven't seen anyone do any good tests comparing fuel mileage in the two modes.

The C14 apparently does mess with fueling, but it is pitched as such and is a more sophisticated system.

I have not done proper testing, but as far as I can tell touring mode does not seem to change fuel consumption. I rarely use it now although I think it can make heavy city driving a little less fatiguing.

I am in my second week commuting now and my average is standing at 5L/100km so far this week. 5.4L/100km actual. My long commute was a bit more energetic this week, 125 to 135 km/h indicated. My consumption was around. 5.4L/100km indicated for that section, 5.8 actual.
