Thought I might as well sign up over here since I've been reading every word like it was gospel for the last few weeks.

The reason it's been a few weeks is because that's when I took a short test ride on the Tenere and haven't got it out of my head since. The hard part is I have a deposit on the Triumph Explorer right now and the Tenere has my rethinking all of that. You'll probably see me asking for more specific comparisons to V-Stroms as whichever I buy will be a replacement for my DL1000, which I've been extremely happy with.

Welcome on, Desert Dave ... from Snow Rem. Well, we won't try to push you either way (tenere tenere). You'll have to make up your own mind (tenere tenere).

But you can get a lot of unbiased (tenere tenere). info from the Forum. Welcome aboard. R ::022::

Welcome to the forum Dave! Many ex-DL owners/riders here, so I'm sure you will be able to get answers to all your questions! I've owned both DL's and I'm VERY happy with my decision to go with the SuoerT.

Good luck!

Welcome.

You have a nice problem choosing. What kind of riding do you do and what things are most important in you next bike, value, power handling etc...?

Yes it is a good problem ;D

At the moment I have a DL1000 and an 800GS, the Strom is my sport touring mount that will explore some easy dirt roads and I take the GS out when I want to get into more technical terrain that I wouldn't take my strom on. Originally I was looking at the Explorer as an upgraded Strom, with the same purpose for me. After riding the Tenere I've been thinking it would be an upgraded Strom and also close the gap a lot to the type of riding I do on my GS. Not to mention when I rode the Tenere so many things just clicked, from riding position to handling, and that's rare for me. Really if the S10 just had a bit more power on top end I'd probably have done it already. I need another test ride, preferably not in a group ;)

Hi Dave,
Welcome. noticed your name and location (Bay area?) have had my ST since End of July, about 6k miles and is getting better by the mile...I'm up in the area fairly regularly. just got back from the San Mateo IMS...

you by any chance know my brother Blaine Dehmlow, your name sounded familiar? he was building the Ducati Terra Mostro a few years back, (I have the last one, most fun bike I've ever ridden, but the Tenere is coming very close with a little more long distance comfort and amazingly well behaved off road!))

Wow it's a small world. Yeah I know Blaine, only Dehmlow I've ever met, I thought you were him at first.

I'm nearby in Tracy, most of my rides are in the Sierras. Up in Kennedy Meadows yesterday on the Strom. Down your way at Florence lake a month ago, and even on pavement that road made me think an S10 would be the ticket!

San Mateo IMS is where I test rode the Yamaha, way to short of a ride.

Welcome to the forum. Same thing happened to me a bit over a year ago. Rode the Tenere at the San Mateo Show last year and that was it, could not get it out of my head. Gave up my Multistrada for it and have not look back in regret even a bit. I saw the Explorer at the show this year and it is a fine looking bike and we all know that triple is a great motor but the one thing I noticed right off was how top heavy it was. The Tenere carries it's weight better than any bike I have ridden. It is really flickable, full lock stand up walking pace turns are a breeze and it is really easy to pick up I hear (not yet had to do that)

Quite a few of us in the area, Sacramento, foothills, Lodi, Bay area. The forum is filled with great information, many opinions, and more than a few product reviews. I think you would be hard pressed to find people here who did not love their Teneres'. Enjoy and ask the questions

Triumph has confirmed that the Explorers at the show (so far) are mock-ups, not running bikes, so they probably are not going to be very representative of weight or how the weight feels.

That is interesting. I will tell you it tokk three tries to get it off the side stand and it was getting embarassing ??? Third time I gave it a might tug and it finally unstuck from the floor. If that was a mock-up I am not sure what they had in the tank to make it so top heavy

I completely understand what Mark is saying, but I have to imagine the general design is done and any changes are going to be focusing on things other than weight distribution.

One of the biggest complaints of the Tiger 1050 is the top-heaviness. There is a poll going on the Tiger1050 forum for whether you've dropped your bike or not, and last I checked it was over 50% had dropped it. Tall, top-heavy, that will do it.

I like the new Explorer, I think it is going to be a really nice package overall. However, I think the S10 is going to own it off the pavement.

I have some experience in this area and what is frequently done with prototypes is that they are built with non-standard materials or techniques that are easier to make for a short production run. As but one example, the fuel tank may be constructed of an entirely different material and/or have a different thickness. And in a non-running model, parts of the engine may be entirely missing (e.g., the crankshaft). So if you have a mock-up without a crankshaft and a fuel tank that weighs 2x more than it should, you are definitely going to get a completely different feel for the bike rocking it side to side compared to what the production bike will be.

The bike at the shows is probably a mix of production parts (stuff that has the longest lead time like engine castings), one-off prototype parts, and missing parts.

Where did you find this confirmation? I've been watching most anything I can find on the new Explorer, and I've read the rumors about the bike at the IMS shows being a mock up but have yet to see any news of this being confirmed. Everything I've seen was speculation. If Triumph confirmed this I'm wondering why they wouldn't put that in bold letters near the mock up, as it leaves a bad impression to compare with. You'd think if anything they'd want a mock up to feel BETTER than reality for marketing purposes. Any more info on this would be appreciated.

Kind of lost track of this thread since I've been so busy digging into the rest of the forum :) Thanks for all the welcomes.

My decision is leaning further towards the Yamaha the more I look into it.
