What's the purpose of the rubber plug in the swing arm? Mine is a loose one.

By the way, I love this bike. 1,000+ miles in 3 weeks without going anywhere, just riding...

I am not sure what it is for but I am sure someone on this forum knows. I checked mine after seeing your post and mine is also loose. I plan on cleaning it up and using some liquid rubber to re fit. I don't think I want dirt and water going in that location.

This bike does many things very well. I love it too. I can see me keeping this bike for a very long time. ::008::

The swingarm is a hollow cast unit and the hole is left over from the casting process. The plug is there to prevent water from getting into the there.

My KTM has the same thing...but the plugs have a tendancy to leak, so we pull them out and put a bit of RTV sealant around them to stop them from leaking. I should do this on the St just for good measure. I have not checked to see if there is a drain hole on each arm of the swingarm (the KTM does not) nor would I put one in.

Lots of people drill small holes in their KTM 950/990 swingarms to relieve water which collects.....mine included. When I drilled my first hole (keep you mind on motorcycles people), about 3 ounces came out on one side...the other, about 2 drops.

Had you sealed the plugs beforehand? On my 530EXC the plugs were clear plastic and not very supple so they did not seal very well. Did you install a removable plug or anything in the drain hole to prevent water intrusion thru the drain hole?

Where is this plug located? I don't see one. My swingarm does have what looks like drain holes on the bottom at rear of each side.

This is getting off topic as it now relates to KTMs. But to answer your question...the 950s have decently supple black rubber plugs on either side of the swingarm. And no, I did not install any other plugs...if water comes in, it drains right out. No need to complicate things.

This is a Tenere forum, right ::024:: kidding ;D

The plug is on the inside of the swing arm, in line with the leading edge of the rear tire.
Hahaha, I touched mine and it fell off. Good to know now it's barely held in place.

I was washing my bike on a warm day in the summer and I pressed that swingarm rubber pluggy cause it felt loose. The little sucker shot into my swingarm and I couldn't get it out ???

So, now I have a new one with old one floating around in the swing arm ::007::

I barely touched mine and it fell out in my hand. As luck would have it, I had a tube of black RTV handy. I cleaned everything up and re-installed with a bead of sealant on the plug. Thanks to the OP for the heads up.

Glad my question raised some awareness ::008::

You all should keep an eye open for loose rubber parts... Me being a quality manager, I'm seeing a trend  I've washed my ST twice (hose, no power washer) and each time there was a mystery rubber part on the ground when I was done. One is clearly a grommet, the other a press-in spacer or small dampener.

Yamaha has a little ways to go to match the Honda quality I'm accustom to. For now I'll ::021::

Thanks for the heads up. Mine was there still after 9500 mi, but typically loose. Pulled it, cleaned it up, did a little alcohol wipe at the mating edges and gave it some RTV love. It won't fall out now and I can still remove it if there is some reason to. ::003::

I'm guessing there is only one plug since the left side is the shaft drive?
