Rubber grommet under rear rack behind pillion seat

Does anyone know what the rubber grommet under the rear rack behind pillion seat is for? It's perfectly situated to take a 12v socket or something, but there's not enough gap under it for that. In fact it seems to be purely for access to a bolt, but surely there must be more to it than that...?

I believe this will answer your question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEqJsfoodfs. I ran into this video somehow after I routed a wire through that grommet for an additional tail/brake light. I guess I won't be using the luggage rack in the lowered position now. I had no idea the rack could be changed like that.
Who is that handsome young movie star in that video? ;D

Fark, who knew the rack could do that?
It's been a discussed feature of the bike many times. It is also mentioned on page 4-28/4-29 of the owner's manual. Though they do not discuss how to achieve the "additional carrier", just show pictures. I did this the day I brought the bike home and never put it back since I ride solo.

You can order up four more of the rubber bumpers that are on the under the pillion seat portion and fit them to the rear rack to get a completely flat surface if you have something long and flat that will be laying across that area. I did this when I mounted my fuel cell there, as it spans both the rack and under pillion seat area.

Some years will require some clearance-ing of the rear rack with a Dremel or similar tool as the grab handles pinch the rear rack when you try to push it down into the lower position.

I tried to do this to my bike but I found the passenger handrails were too close together for the rack to bolt down flat, I thought there must be some missing spacers, anyone else had this problem?

It sounds like the idea is to remove the grab handles (since there's no pillion in this scenario anyway).

You can leave the handrails on. When I did that video we had a Euro model that Yamaha was sending around to the dealers in January, 2011 before the USA models arrived and there was no interference with the handrails and rack on that bike. When the USA models arrived, we saw that there was a small bit of interference at one point on each handrail. Two solutions are: 1, Dremel a small notch on each side of the plastic rack where the interference is or 2. use washer type spacers to move the handrails out a bit. I chose to do the Dermel method on both my 12 and 14 Teneres and that worked fine for me.
