Hi all several questions:
Due to being diagnosed with Degenerative Disk Disease I am now having to look about fitting a riders backrest to give me lumbar support which can fold forward ( to aid me getting on). I know there are companies in the USA that can mod the rear seat to take one but is there anyone in Europe (preferably UK)?
Or has someone modded one for another bike to suit?
If I can not find a solution I am going to have to trade in the bike for a Bergan 650 :( as riding the rile at the moment is very painful and brings no joy.
Regards and all that
Jay

I know you're looking in Europe, but it's not a big deal to ship back and forth from the USA. Give Russell Day Long a look. It's expensive, but cheaper than changing bikes and the results are great.

Had one on the GSA. Backrest folds down nicely.

Put one on the S-10 but, regretfully, went without the backrest. When I'm packed for camping, my bags are my backrest.

Update. Now have a temp backrest - horrid cheap £9 eBay backrest pad strapped to a Givvi bag ( currently filled with firm foam for support) that straps tight to the passenger seat. When I sit on the bike on the centre stand and sit back it's great, nice and supportive and I spent my lunch hour sat there with no pain. Only trouble is I can not touch the handle bars!

Went for a ride yesterday with my best mate, only a quick 50 mile trip to a local bike meet. Nearly died with the back pain as I could not lean back and rest on the support and hold the bars.
Now looking at taking off the OEM engine bars so I can sit with my legs out and getting some handle bars that will reach back to where I want them to be so that I end up with my riding position more like a custom bike.

Sorry to hear of your back pain. If it comes down to it , the Burgman is an awesome scooter.
Hope you resolve your issue.

I used a quarter inch aluminum plate cut to size for the passenger cargo area. I then made some brackets for a Russell Backrest that I use on another seat. Drilled and tap some holes and all is good. I plan to powder coat the plate and brackets, I just got the fab work done about a week ago. I know you do not have a Russell Backrest, but look at the pictures, what I have done would be easy for a welding shop to fabricate.

Probably will end up moving the top box fwd as the wife very rarely comes out on the bike. Removed the OEM engine bars this afternoon so will try and knock up a temp fwd pegs at work tomorrow just to see if my leg position will feel better.
Took off the front and middle rubbers off the seat and that is a lot better but will try to move the seat a tadge further fwd and bring the bars that few mm closer. Also looking at getting the Rox risers to bring the bars up and back.

Most if not all are for sites selling in the USA or require the original seat. As the bike is my daily transport I need the seat. Being in the UK I would rather avoid the US manufactures. Easiest and cheapest is to move the top box to the passenger seat position. A Corbin backrest and fittings is £250-300 plus the seat at around the £1000 mark, that's in the ouch can not afford that range.

Most that I've seen build into the passenger seat.

To echo Don in Lodi, The Russell riders back rest is fitted into the passenger seat. You would only need to send in the pillion and not the drivers seat to get just the backrest done. I understand it will still be costly however, having to ship to the US. Still would seem a much less expensive option than a different bike. I can attest that my RDL riders backrest works really well and is highly adjustable so you can still reach the handlebars comfortably while sitting against the backrest. My experience with Russell was very positive and they were quick to answer any questions I had. Shoot them an email and see what they say. never hurts to ask.

Hope you can find a suitable solution.

Buy a used passenger seat in the US off ebay, send it directly to the seat builder then have them ship it directly to you with just the cost of the work on the customs dec form.......

Some information from Day Long on Rider Backrest for the S10

I called and email them a few time and they are friendly and have photos of rider back rests on a few S10 ... A class company with high quality products ...

"Our backrest will work fine with the OEM front seat. We would only need your rear seat to install the backrest. A picture of you sitting on the bike in your normal riding position would be needed as well. It will tell us exactly where to install the backrest. Let me know when/if you are going to send it in so I can get you on the calendar."

"The receiver to our driver backrest is built into the passenger portion of your seat and you will need to send it in to add. The cost is $275 for the driver backrest, $75 to modify your stock cover and shipping cost both ways."

Best Progress
