Have done 500 KM and still bonding. This is my first big traillie and must admit I wanted a GS but couldn’t get on with it, no need to go into detail, if you are reading this I am sure you understand.
Coming off a 5 year stint on a tiger 1050, there is a lot to get used to. Really like the pick up form pootle in 1st and 2nd, love the lowdown weight turning into corners, surprised how stealthy the static weight is, I am breaking in so can’t comment on the power but it doesn’t feel effortless, gun it off the blocks and the power sort of dips when I would expect it to get going, whining singing tone in 2nd at 55 Kmh – hope that goes away, not sure yet if I would want to be all day on this mount, twisties better than imagined but trails the pegs too early, left hero is no longer domed and there is still about 5 mm of unused chicken stripe on the rear Metzler, no hero on the right peg, can’t hang off because the seat has square edges (?), harder spring?
I wasn’t planning going off-road but getting into the confident ride over bumps and already taking some grass verges and humpy bits on a building site, only a question of time before I fit some crash bars and do some trails. Leave the spring then?

Questions:
Buffeting. I have a Touratech screen adjuster installed with standard screen but can’t find joy. MRA Vario or Yamaha touring screen on the Ttech adjuster?
Anybody fitted the MRA sport screen? I like naked and clean air, so a solo sporty and 2-up comfort configuration would suit me.

How many (safe) Ks after going to ‘reserve’?

I am really enjoying this bike and know that I will grow into it. My wife still prefers the Tiger – give her time.

Great forum too. Let me contribute straight away: I get shuffled forwards on the perch, and owing to the non slip seat material, I am suffering goolie-garrotting. I fixed this by hooking the saddle into the lowest setting at the back and blocking up the front. Here is a pic. of a prototype which I might develop. I will put more details in another topic.

Interesting mod to the seat, I am looking into that right now, seat does slope too much.

I expect at least 50 miles (80km) when reserve (flash E) comes on probably more. The windscreen is gonna depend on each riders size somewhat. I also find the forks overly stiff ( I am 81kg ) but the bike is bare (no panniers or topcase). The OEM Metzlers Tourances are very round in profile so doubt you will get rid of the complete chicken strips, at least I will not!

Welcome to the forum.

I run out of fuel at 72 km's. About half of that was crusing at 140 km/h, a slower pace and carefull acceleration could make it last ~90-100 km i guess. My safe-range now is about 60 km then..

Just curious - When you block the front up, does it still latch (lock) into position

JustBob, I see that you collect your mount tomorrow? bet you can't wait.
Pic on the way.

Koinz, seat just thinks it is at the highest setting at the front and the lowest at the back, like this the rear tab and the front latch work a treat. I blocked it up at 20mm.

Hey Reg, welcome to the forum! I'm still on a Tiger 1050 myself, so I'm tuning in very carefully to all the previous 1050 owner's opinions. Keep 'em coming.

Hi Reg,

Being a Tiger 1050 owner I too am paying particular attention to ride reports on the ST. No sense comparing apples to oranges but I do like a bike with a lively engine and good handling. Yamaha has a reputation of building great and reliable products and I am a huge fan of Yamaha but if the ST drags pegs at sporting speeds and has a less than exciting engine I'll probably hold off on buying one. I really hope that isn't the case.

I certainly thought the engine was pretty lively in sport mode last Saturday.....and I wasn't even trying!

Then again I don't have a tiger either.

Thanks Koinz, I'm pretty sure the ST is going to prove to be a great bike! I have a very nice arraingement with my dealer and if after the test ride I'm not satisfied they'll give me my deposit back. My fingers are crossed because I really want to like this bike and I give huge credit to Yamaha for finally giving us all a worthy alternative to the BMW's.

I am at 1500 Ks now and am into it. The S10 is a flyer. It serves up the power different to a Tiger.

I think I said it isn't effortless, now I am used to the engine sound and behaviour, it is fine. There is some engine management going on but just keep twisting and it keeps going.

Peg trailing - actually kinda fun and you are well over at that point - what safer way to know your limit!

I like the triple and wanted to wait for the Tiger 1200, but after 5 years I just wanted that new bike rush again this summer rather than next.

Hi. I have a Touratech screen adjuster installed with a MRA Vario screen - Very happy and even at 180km/h there's no buffeting. I can realy recomend this combination. BTW i'm 1.88m tall

As requested, some pics of the lowered seat in profile at seat height.

I like this mod because it is solid and uses the original mounting points and latch.
Ok, I have to go look at mine tonight. You say it uses the original latch. Is that 90 degree bracket required for the latch or what does it do? Hard to tell without looking at it in person.

The 90° bracket reproduces the hole for the seat peg to sit in. This is the only thing (Ican see) which prevents the seat moving back and forth.

Wait: I have more pictures - just no time now, late for a meeting . . . . .

my first longer day, just shy of 1100km (650+ miles). the motor seems even smoother, just doing the first oil change achived that, now its even better. passing is effortless, this thing jumps as soon as I give it the twist. still have not had it past 90mph, thats never been much my thing though.
the windscreen would be my biggest grip, high frequency turbulance just gets increasingly worse as speed increased, blurring my vision. I am not sure that my helmet is not part of the equation, or even my choice of riding gear, but I am happy with my gear package. hopefully, the Givi tall windscreen that in enroute will eliminate the buffeting.
I am more than satisfied with the seat and ergos, there was never a time where I 'had' to get off the bike. range was jsut shy of 400km (240-250mi) before the flashing 'E' . my typical cruising speed was around 70mph indicated. I was only able to put in 4.5gal the first time I stopped for fuel, I do not think this warning comes on at exactly the same tank level all of the time, putting it on the side stand turned on the flashing E, only to have it go out a mile later. not a big deal, just something to put in the back of my mind should I get off the bike, while on the bottom part of the tank.
I am about to go for sunday morning coffee with the neighborhood riders, anticipating another day in the saddle. :)
