So at 88,000 miles my front discs are thinner than the minimum spec - 3.8mm, should be at least 4mm. I can't tell the difference, they are just as effective as ever, but I suppose I should replace it while I have the chance (in France now but heading east soon).

I think I'm getting these
http://www.carpimoto.it/en-FR/41282_78B40860-Brembo-Serie-Oro-Brake-Disc-78B40860.htm

with the strong dollar now, that works out to around $350/pr. Not too bad for Brembos? I've looked at Galfer, stock Yamaha, and others, and they are all more expensive - oh except for cheapo Chinese ones, but not taking a chance on them.

I had Galfer on the V-Strom - they were lighter than stock but one of them warped (maybe too light?), so wouldn't go back to them.

Will post some pics when I get the Brembos.

that looks tasty. do you travel with a micrometer :D 4m vs 3.8

don't get the china stuff, the minute you put some heat in it, they will be bent like pretzels..

just out of curiosity, how much were the yamaha parts?

I just used a vernier, so that measurement may not be 100% accurate! Let's just say, a tad under 4mm...

I found online in France, Yamaha discs for €171 + shipping. Partzilla in the US has them at $149 + shipping. Brembos seem to be a good deal at €159 including shipping.

Yeah I figured the Chinese discs were for decoration only!

Yes, but they make nice wall clocks. ::008::
Always buy the best you can afford when it comes to brakes, try never to skimp on these items. Good luck with your journey East, when are you planning on leaving and what exit point in France are you going through?

Have you looked at PFM discs

Amazing quality, used by Steve Hislop back in the days of him lapping the IOM faster than anyone else.

Also have a neat system where if you ever wear them out you can change just the outer rotors which works out about half the price of a complete disc.

Fitted some to a ZZR1400 (ZX14R) as the OE ones would warp every time I tried to ride around in mountains (2 sets in under 10k, each European trip would warp a set) and they not only felt much nicer they lasted me 10k (two further Alps trips) and have been on a mates bike ever since (about 4 years) with no problems.

No Rasher, hadn't looked at them, heard of them though. Just checked, they are about 40% more expensive than the Brembos. Brembos will work well enough for me, at the 159 euro price point. Running Heidenau or similar fronts all the time, I can't use all the braking power I have anyway - ABS will kick in long before I stress the brakes too much...

Hiya Trevor -
Sorry not to get back on Messenger.

The Brembo rotors do look nice. I'm not a fan of the sintered iron pads that Brembo is suggesting for these, as the sintered iron can really chew through rotors.

I got the cheapos on Ebay or some place like that.

So far so good.

Expense and availability steered me to by the cheap set front and rear for like $370.

I think there gone as a search didn't pull the same rotors.

I don't think I'd go for the cheapest option when it comes to stopping my bike.....

They will still stop the bike.

But they will warp something fierce. btdt
