Dear friends,

I just wanted to share this information, as it has helped me. You may evaluate for yourself whether or not this makes sense or if you want to proceed with this.

It is well known that the superten has repetitive problems with coil corrosion and adherent problems, as the radiator is situated on the side and not infront of the engine and the coils to protect them. This has caused grief for a lot of people, myself included. I live in Colombia South america, and as I was whining about this on a forum, lots of people responded that they had changed their coils with the Suzuki Bandit 650, and the issuen never returned. There are some locally famous mechanics that swear by this.

The problem is that the yamaha's coils 1. have a vulnerable canal underneath the rubber covering, which is where the water enters. 2., the coil has a metal covering, increasing its risk of short circuiting with the motor wall. The suzuki bandit is fully covered by rubber, and does not have a canal (spacing) underneath the rubber covering where water can enter. I found a video by one mechanic online about this and I paid him for some advice. He told me that he has used this mod with over 80 s10 bikes at this point and it has resolved the problem in every single instance and the issue has not returned, even years afterwards. There are gentle spec differences between the two coils, but they claim that it does not matter. The suzuki coils also come without the screw peg, so it is attached with silicone, FYI.

Basically, (7:50 in the video) take off the rubber covering on top, smear dielectric grease beneath it. Then cover the lower 2/3 of the coil with dielectric grease, as shown in the video below (spanish knowledge not necessary to understand what he clearly shows), then place some standard high temp silicone at the top to seal it off and as a mild adhesive. NB: You also need to remove the heads from the SPARK PLUG, or it won't fit with the Bandit plug (5:10 in the video).

It is also recommended to install a front fender-extender.

I hope some of you will find this helpful.

Regards
