so there is no right answer here:

yes start a long tip with fresh meat, good planning

so you are on a trip and a tire wears out, what to do buy a new one...........check it during the trip, call a day or two out after checking with the ST forum (where ever you will be) will get you a good dealer, good planning.

so what is the common factor? Take a trip and plan accordingly.......most of all have fun and dont over think it.

Yes, that is my current plan. I figure that my planned route (Seattle to Jasper/Banff to Bozeman to Colorado Springs to Wichita or Tulsa then to Memphis, Ashville and up the East Coast via Skyline Drive and back roads through PA/NY/MA) will never leave me more than 100-200 miles from a decent Yamaha dealer. If I notice worn tires I can plan to be at a dealership the next day or two away and have an appointment to get tires changed.

One question: do most Yamaha dealers keep tires in stock or should I allow a few days lead time to have them order for me? Do dealers force you to buy from them or could I have internet sourced tires shipped to a dealer and just pay the dealer for installation? Any reason to limit myself to Yamaha dealers?

I don't really buy much at Cycle Gear, but they always seem to have a good selection of tires for my bikes. Based on your route, they could be an alternative. I believe they allow you to work on your bike in their parking lots as well.

There is a Cycle Gear a few miles from my home. I'm not a fan. Nice enough people work there but they carry a lot of their own "brand" stuff, especially in apparel and helmets, that is generally pretty cheesy compared to leading brands. More like Walmart than Costco quality. I haven't checked for my tire size there but I know their entire tire rack only holds about 30-40 tires. They did seem to carry Bridgestone Battleax and at least one Michelin tire though so I'll keep it in mind.

Large dealers usually have plenty of stock but not all brands. Small shops, not so much. Most will charge a fitting fee if you source tires elsewhere. Some will charge a storage fee for holding tires for you if they are something you bought elsewhere.

There's no hard and fast rule.

You have even more options than that, because the same tire size is used on the VStrom, BMW, and others.

As CW points out, nearly any motorcycle shop can do a tire change. I had a local Honda/Kawasaki dealer change out tires for me once. I did just take in my tires and wheels since I was close to home on that one, but even for them to pull the wheels to do the work it wasn't bad...Some larger cities also have motorcycle tire shops that could do the work.

To bring up an older thread, here are my E-07's with 16K miles on them.

95%+ has been on road due recovering from a fusion surgery recently. Usually run them at 42/38, but they have been run at half that on and off road. Front are cupping pretty good, and I plan on replacing them before my next trip in about a month or so.

Even if one never takes them off road, how can you beat the mileage, even with regular tires.
