Hi there,

This is for my S10 2012
After a long trip including some critical offroad tracks, my rear suspension is now too soft despite adjusting it to hard. I see no leak whatsoever...can the supertenere rear suspension go banana without any leak? It has never been touched or changed since produced in 2012...

Thanks

Yes it can.
With the endless cycling of the suspension over the years, things will get tired and worn-out.
The spring-rate will degrade over time as things fatigue, and will weaken, leaving you with a suspension that sags more.

I had my rear Shock rebuilt/re-valved with a new-heavier spring.

Yes... Just as the other two gentlemen have stated.... It's probably worn out and possibly something internal has "changed".... If the front has not been serviced in years or ever, it defiantly needs attention as well........

I often bring up with friends and suspension is this, think about it like the motor oil in your car or bike.... Even if you dont ride/drive it a ton you might want to change the motor oil because it does get old... Most people drive/ride enough that it's time to change the oil................... Suspension is similar "not exactly", but a general rule its not good or perform "forever"......

When I started riding the Tenere in 2011, I started hitting the off road pretty hard and riding the bike everyday. Within 9 months I had all the preload / damping / and everything I could turned up to 100%..... I was still bottoming out the suspension every weekend..... It was done already.................... (it progressively got worst and worst over the 9 mo)

It's probably just worn and needs some tender loving service care !

Depending on what you want to put into it (or not),,, you can service it back to virtually new for very little money if someone chooses that.... Of course, someone can add a little more money and change the whole ride of the bike to better suit yourself as another option..... And it can go on from there......

Thanks for your quick responses.

Yes I confirm it has never been serviced (but also wonder what kind of servicing was I expected to do?). The front has definitely been done recently after a fork oil leak...but the service was about changing oil and seals only.

Is there a specific thread on how to fix the rear shock? The thing is that I need to order it from abroad and it will take time...fixing it will get me going for the rest of the season and then it can go to rest while the part is arriving.

Just a quick update, I took it to the shop and while it had almost no oil left inside, they couldn't understand how it happened nor how I did 2000km with the rear shock in that shape...they also did not understand the high level of heat they noticed to the level the yellow sticker outside turned dark...they even suspected that I used flames to try to open it which was crazy....

I guess all in all I was lucky to make it safe back home...

I got it rebuilt for 60 usd and they changed a damaged part inside and now it is looking great...

Thanks once again

Yeah in my neck of the woods these prices are common....though he said he fixed one shock of a GS and charged 180 usd for it...I guess when he red that my suspension was manufactured in 2011 and that I rise a supertenere he felt 60 usd was reasonable...who knows!

Just wondered if someone upgraded both the rear suspension (to ohlins or trx) and the front suspension at the same time....how does the bike feel? Does it become more offroad capable say like the suspension on ktm 1290 SAR? if not I will probably go for the ktm...

Cheers

Uh . . . . blackriver. I guess I had a senior moment and got onto the wrong thread. I'll get the troll post deleted. Sorry.
No worries...I was worried a bit as I was thinking may be I pushed the discussions on the suspension upgrade a bit too far LOL
Cheers
