So this is a personal gripe. Not with this board but just about any Motorcycle Forum I belong to.

Why do people feel the need to list the motorcycles they "Formerly" owned in their Signature? Sure I get what you currently have. It is interesting to me when people can own more than one bike what they like to have/keep. But ones you don't have anymore? What's with that?

I think it'd look pretty ridiculous if I listed the other 25 motorcycles I've owned over the years.. and what's the point.. its history!

Okay, I'm putting the double-espresso down...

This thread doesn't look too bad.....at least it's not political or something. I have a few bikes in my signature. When I see them, it's like looking at family pictures and remembering an event that involved that particular bike. I hope that it brings fond memories of rides that I've taking and not bad crashes that give you the bad memories of them. In that case I would remove it from signature. For me, its not about how many bikes I have owned, it's about the memories I've shared with them. ;D

Good point! Makes sense. I never thought of it that way... I guess I've always viewed a motorcycle as a tool, like a wrench or something. A means to an end like a fast bike when I raced. So if this year it was brand X then I rode that. Next year if it was brand Y, thats what I rode...

Like I've never named any of my motorcycles. They've always been what they are/were; RZ500, GSXR, etc....

Although I must admit, I'm really liking this Super Tenere and defintely don't see it the same way I've viewed other motorcycles I've owned. Its almost like a companion that takes me places... Yeah I'm nuts!!!!!

Ya, I never named any of my bikes either, but I've had some nice trips on every one of them.

My Memorable trips by bike - BMW CLC - Nova Scotia, Wisonsin, First Time in Vermont.
Vstrom - First trip down south to North Carolina, West Virginia, Up-State New York. I think I had it in Vermont

Tenere - Northern Ontario last year, Vermont, North Carolina, Kentucky, West Virginia/Virginia, Up State New York. Going up to Vermont again this Weekend.

there is code available to make the signature show only a few lines with an option for end users to expand it if the admins have time to implent it
In your own profile under the "look and layout" section you can choose not to show signatures.

IMHO .... +1 with the original poster. Drives me bonkers when I have to scroll down two pages (slight exaggeration) to get to the next post in a thread because someone needs to tell their life story in a signature....

It does look silly when you start getting signatures that are bigger than the actual posts.

Always thought it was kind of interesting , Gives some what of a history on what type of riding one has done. But yea too many gets a little long toothed. I guess if I ever have an orgasm on one it would give me some encouragement to name it. :-*

I've often wondered the same thing, and I suspect it's simply a form of "BS-ing." In this case though, BS-ing isn't what you think. Instead, it's Butt Sniffing - the same ceremonius ritual that dogs use when meeting another dog for the first time (and all subsequent visits for that matter as well). By listing all of one's previously owned bikes, the message it telegraphs is..."Go ahead, sniff my butt. My knowledge is greater than your knowledge" ...or something loosely to that effect. It's about determining one's place in the hierarchy (or pack) here on the forum.

I like to see what people rode in their past, it's interesting. IMHO, anyone that would get upset over it has some issues to deal with.

Never got the impression anyone was upset over it...but if I listed all 61 previously owned motorcycles in my signature, it would likely be "interesting" for entirely different reasons. Listing what's currently in the garage is fine. Any more than that seems pointless...unless that was your point.
