Radiator "Air Guide"

There is a plastic cover fitted as shown No.25 below that covers about a third of the radiator. This is described as "Guide Air" in the parts book but is strangely quick detachable. My local dealer mechanic, who owns a Tenere, was wondering if this cover had the effect of preventing over-cooling for us in more temperate climes and was removeable for high temperature rides. Or is it, as described, something that facilitates air flow over the radiator. Anybody know or have any of you desert dwellers in the Southern USA tried running with it removed?

I looked at mine in detail, the part is used to channel the air from the back of the radiator to the fan. Increasing the effective surface are of the fan. Or in other words, its a cooling duck.

I would not mess with it, unless you could replace it with a second smaller fan assembly.

No, no my colonial brethren - that is DUCT tape originally for taping up and sealing ventilation ducts like the DUCT described on the Yamaha (thanks for the insight on that - you're probably right). What the hell would a DUCK have to do with it? Probably yet another good English word you have bastardised and mis-spelt.

I was wondering about. In hot countries the fan works a lot.
Is strange that in the Worldcrosser version this area is also blocked but there is a grill in the other side

Just for the record, there is a brand of duct tape called Duck Tape :D

FWIW, I live in Southern Utah. I ride in 100F+ temps all summer, sometimes well above that, meaning 110-120F, especially if I'm over in Death Valley, CA. Heck, it was 90F there last weekend at Stovepipe Wells, and it's Winter here now. Rarely do I notice the fan coming on if I'm at 50 mph or above. It probably has, but I can't recall it. Below that speed, I have had the fun come on more in very high temps, but always it runs a cycle and shuts off. To me, that means the fan was able to cool the system down enough to trigger it's shut off. The air guide/duct seems to work just fine. It may simple be quick detachable for simplicity sake, since it's just a plastic piece. It's not like it needs bolts to hold it in place.

See - even the manufacturers can't get it right! But enough with the tape already. I would still like to hear from those with an opimion on the "air guide".

+1
Pretty normal in the world of radiators and heat exchangers.

We've already determined it's there for a reason, don't eff with it. We've since moved on to more important matters, duck tape. ::008::

And did you know 'real' duct tape is scary stuff. Aluminum backed, sticks like hell, takes scissors to cut, will never flake or rot away.

Real Duct tape is a bigger marvel than what passes for duck tape now.

You are right. The Foil-silver stuff with the blue adhesive. Magical.

Not in MA, IL, PA or OH. It's ok in DC with consent of the duck though. ::008::

I carry a full roll of good duct tape on the bike. I have taped together more crashed sport bikes than anything else, but it helps for deer strike re-assembly too. It always cracks me up when another rider comes up to me in the parking lot as asks if they can have a strip to fix something. ::013:: Dude, I have a whole roll, knock yourself out! Funny thing too, no one has ever stolen it off the bike. I'm still working on the same roll I bought in '06 and have lots left.
