Road tested many bikes prior to moving on from my old Tiger 955i and out of all of them, I liked the GS the least. There was nothing major wrong with it per se but it was more a collection of niggly dislikes, that made me want to stay away. Many of my GS owning acquaintances actually said that I should buy one anyway, as I'd get used to the idiosyncrasies and eventually grow to love them. The fact that this was coming from blokes who seemed to spend more time either slagging every other make of bike off, or whingeing about how much they were being stung to keep their beloved "pinnacles of reliability" running, meant that their bizarre notion held no water for me.

I ended up riding a Super Tenere on a whim, after my local Yamaha dealer suggested that I at least give it a try. To my complete surprise, I found myself really liking the bike. It just felt good and seemed to fit me perfectly. The S10 hadn't even appeared on my radar before I rode one, most likely because Yamaha had promoted it so poorly here and the UK motorcycle press were damning it with distinctly faint praise. Despite all that, I liked the bike that I rode so much, I bought the demonstrator there and then and, despite the subsequent howls of derision from my BMW owning acquaintances, I still believe it's the better bike for me.

that was my next question................I guess next time someone asks if it is a BMW I will tell them how much I hate Starbucks and point out the lack of a Latte Holder.

The whole GS vs.Tenere thing bores the $hit out of me at this point. Ride what you like, like what you ride. But I can give several reasons why I ordered a 2016 ST
My 02 FZ1 was incredibly reliable for the 10 yrs I owned it. If an ST is half as reliable I'll be happy.
I thought about a newer GS. I really like the WC models but I tend to study bikes for awhile before making any decision and any perusal of a BMW forum made me realize I wasn't interested in dealing with the quirks. And there are an awful lot of quirks/issues. Oh, and even if the dealer covers the warranty issues without charge, doesn't mean it's not a pain. Not with a shorter NE riding season.
I have no use for the local BMW dealer. He's screwed too many of my friends to make me ever want to go there. It's over 2 hrs to Max's form here...too far.
The local Yamaha dealer on the other hand has a good service/parts dept. and I trust them not to blatantly mess with me.
I despise Starbucks. Their coffee sucks.

And some small part of me is genetically coded to hate having 2 bigass cylinders right in front of my shins.

This thread can run on forever, reminds me of the old beer chant"Taste great, Less filling". Whatever, it's still beer. GS or S10, whatever it's still a motorcycle. If you need to pose for Fobes magazine or Robb's report, then by all means spend money on an image. If on the other hand, you want to ride and enjoy the freedom, people and not being like the others, then ride want you want, want what you ride.

Good Luck

For me personally, it's because I was invited to and I (and many others) find it interesting. If people don't want to join in with or read about Beemer related discussions, then don't read them. ::)

Point I'm about to make comes up more often than zits on a teenager, but I can never get me head around folk reading something they don't want to read about? ??? I avoid doing that all the time on this forum and elsewhere. If the title all the contents are not my thing, I simply retreat and read one of the many other topics instead... Long as folk ain't rude, aggressive, etc what's the harm for those that like to read or discuss such things. 'Versus' topics on any social site will always be there and repeated time and time again, same as any other topic, leaving existing members aside, new members will join these sites and share there thoughts on the old done to death topics, but thats surely just a fact of life. 8) Just wear gloves and be civil with each other... ::003::

"Why the S10 vs a GS?" is an easy question to answer. Because it's what I wanted!

If you want to get into the actual why one wanted a S10 vs a BMW, it's a bit more complex. I opted for a GS recently because it had features and functionality that the Super Tenere didn't offer. Shift assist pro. Onboard computer. Cruise control (I had a 2013 Super Tenere), lighter, to me, handles better in the curves, more comfortable on the highway, etc.

There's no right answer. Buy whatever you wish. As long as the buyer is happy with the bike, the opinions of others about it shouldn't matter. If one has to seek validation from others about their choice of motorcycles, that's a bigger problem than what bike to choose.

Thanks to adventurelounger, I now have a new helmet decal design for the next time I make a set. I really like BMW's, but that was still pretty funny.

Six pages of ongoing fifth grader Heckling utter nonsense!!
These discussions of BMW and Tenere on a non BMW forum just stirs the small Minority of the Beamer boys up, sort of senseless if I may say. Someone sells there S10 and buys a new KTM it's double high five all week long mention BMW and we have a major fault line develop!!
Just say what you really want to say and then

Move on and live with what you got and be happy, because you can't take it with you when you go mates.. ::003::

As far as the title "Question I get asked a lot: Why the S10 vs a GS"?
I never had anyone ask me that I could give a Rat's Arse, just pretty soccer moms telling me how much they like my
Big Blue Tenere!! ::024::

RC you've taken it to a whole other level.

I, too, not only love BMWs (I've owned 2 "baby" GS's—an F650 and an F800GS), but I also have an old '74 airhead that I picked up and fixed up last summer. I love it.

But what I really didn't want in my long-distance ADV bike was hassle and bullshit, and the GS, as great a bike as it is, seems to have too much of it.

I'm ok with incessant noodling on a 40-year old antique beemer. But on a new, state of the art ADV-bike? Final drive worries, et al? Pass.

In 4,000 awesome miles on my '13 Tenere (so far), not a single, solitary hiccup. Zilch. Zippo. Nada. I also haven't found anything wanting. Maybe the heated-grips controller could be better integrated and less "slapped-on". Maybe the pannier locks should have a separate button or latch to allow for one-handed operation. Maybe the seat could be 1.5 degrees flatter. Ummmm...that's it. It really truly is all the GS without ANY BS. But said with BMW love and respect.

For me mostly brand loyalty, and I liked the bike. This is my 6th new Yamaha.

I also like having an extensive dealer network you never need.
