Road tested many bikes prior to moving on from my old Tiger 955i and out of all of them, I liked the GS the least. There was nothing major wrong with it per se but it was more a collection of niggly dislikes, that made me want to stay away. Many of my GS owning acquaintances actually said that I should buy one anyway, as I'd get used to the idiosyncrasies and eventually grow to love them. The fact that this was coming from blokes who seemed to spend more time either slagging every other make of bike off, or whingeing about how much they were being stung to keep their beloved "pinnacles of reliability" running, meant that their bizarre notion held no water for me.
I ended up riding a Super Tenere on a whim, after my local Yamaha dealer suggested that I at least give it a try. To my complete surprise, I found myself really liking the bike. It just felt good and seemed to fit me perfectly. The S10 hadn't even appeared on my radar before I rode one, most likely because Yamaha had promoted it so poorly here and the UK motorcycle press were damning it with distinctly faint praise. Despite all that, I liked the bike that I rode so much, I bought the demonstrator there and then and, despite the subsequent howls of derision from my BMW owning acquaintances, I still believe it's the better bike for me.
