I am planning to send my seat to Seth Laam, has anyone not been happy with the quality or comfort. Not interested in the communication or delivery time; those are well documented, no need to go into that again.

Haven't tried one but I've always read good things about them as well as the Russell Day Long...I'm seriously considering getting one or the other. I bought a used Saddleman seat that I have not had the chance to properly try out on a long ride so I'm kinda holding off to see if that works out.

The only negatively thing I've read (outside of what you mentioned) is that the seats do spread your legs a bit more when your legs are down so it effectively takes away some of your reach. Not a big deal if you have a long inseam (I don't) so something to keep in mind.

I had Seth do my seat on my 2014ES. Since I received it I have had a nice long 2200+ mile trip on it down the Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge Parkway...to Kentucky...and back to upstate New York. All I have for an ass is skin-over-bone. Result...first day I did 475 miles...no problem.
I did go to Colorado and back on the stock seat and thank god I had my air hawk with me. Now, no need to bring it with me.
All I can say is that Seth's seat did wonders for my butt. Very good quality for a very reasonable price.
As I have noted elsewhere on this site...send it in way before you want to go for a ride. Seth is constantly swamped with work.

I had a Laam seat on my 2012 and another on my 2014. They were both very comfortable and the quality was great. On a whim I decided to try a RDL when they had their annual sale last November. I have the Sport version, which doesn't sit as tall as the regular RDL and even though the Lamms were very good, this RDL is better........but at about twice the price.

Re: Quality & comfort of Laam seats

I've had 2 Laam seats. One on a C14 and the other on my ST. I absolutely love them. Incredibly comfortable seats at a very reasonable price.

As soon as I can schedule good weather and time off work... plan to ride to Redding CA to have my Bill Mayer rebuilt by Seth. I showed it to him last month and he wants to make the seat better.

I love my Laam seat. I got the material that is similar to the stock cover also. No sliding around on it but not too grippy either. It was a little hard at first but has broken in nicely. I don't think about the seat while I'm riding anymore. It has a good shape to it.

I'm bummed, shipped my seat out on 11/30 and the weather has been great ever since. Had a 12/7 scheduled date and no word out of Laam Seats; I sent them an email and left a message to make sure it arrived in good shape but nothing. Hope their seats are better than there customer service.

I have had Laam and Rusell Day Long. For mid-distance riding, Laam is a great seat. For serious long distance, Russell is the best. I am putting up my Laam for sale and replacing it with another Daylong.

I have 3 Laam seats. My wife's 2000 BMW R1100RS, the rider seat on my 2013 Tenere, and the passeneger seat of the 2013 Tenere.
  • The BMW seat had to be sent back and reshaped but is now great and did not raise the seat height.
The Tenere rider seat is much better than stock and looks great.
The Tenere passenger seat was sent back for reshaping and was worse after return, the grab handles now cause pressure points. I have not sent it back for a third try.

I use the Laam seat for commuting and local rides. It is lower, looks better than stock, and will tolerate being out in the weather better than the Russell. The Russell is better for long rides (>300 miles) but raises the seat height significantly, is bucket shaped to collect water, and is butt ugly. My wife has refused to take long rides as a passenger on any bike unless it has a Russell passenger seat.

I had some difficulty reaching Seth Laam but when I did reach him he was great to work with. I like the Laam seats much better than anything except the Russell seats.

Random aside to the aftermarket seat modifiers: I got to sit on a GS Bill Mayer Saddle this past weekend and holy crap is that thing comfortable! I use an Airhawk for long distance rides but that BM saddle put the airhawk to utter, utter shame.

Is the Laam seat anything like it, i.e. are you sitting on a cloud of marshmallows and sunshine?

IMO, the Bill Mayer saddle is comfortable to sit on momentarily, but not nearly as comfortable on a ride. The longer the ride, the less comfortable it gets. I would make it about 50 miles before the seat was just horrendously uncomfortable on my R1200RT. I gave Bill ("Rocky") three opportunities to fix it before giving up on his product.

I will let you know soon. I got a follow up call from Laam seats today to basically review my riding style and define what I expect from the seat. My typical day when on a trip is 300-400 miles (500-600 if pure slab) I do use the bike to commute about 25 miles each way and my typical ride is 150 miles for a basic Saturday ride (so I am not an iron butt rider). Seth indicated that told him that I do not need the extra width and height required for the iron butt types. For me the extra height was not a good thing as I can flat foot the bike now but add much height and that would pose a challenge. I was glad he called rather than just building a super long distance seat that added 2" of height. Looks like it will ship back tomorrow. Due to previous issues with vendors, I was skeptical about the delayed communications but it appears that Laam seats is just out straight; I have high expectations.

I have had a BMS since 2011 and it has been tolerable for 45,000 miles but... I am going with Steve Laam as soon as I can get three days of good weather and time off work. Steve has seen my BMS seat and had all the right thoughts and answers.

I've had a Laam seat for a couple of years now. have toured over 4k miles with it. no complaints. Great piece of kit. Will have him build others for other bikes.
