This is why I never used grip glue when I installed the heated grip package on my 2014 Non-ES. Windex works great and has allowed me to remove/replace my grips as I've swapped bars twice now to the Adventure Highs.

When I took off the stock grips I used a long skinny flathead screw driver to gently go under the grip enough that I could twist the grip off the handlebar and re-use them if I ever needed to.

Thanks Defekticon. This "windex" is intriguing. Why does it even work? Does it dry sticky? Why windex over hairspray? I'll have to try it. The only reason I wouldn't like it is if it comes loose, then I can try something else! ::025::

When it drys it provides enough adhesion that I would have to grab it with both hands and put some English on it to get them to come loose. My uncle taught me that trick when he gave me my first bike a CR125 Elsinore as a kid.

I've used hairspray for that job as well.

I don't adjust the regulator on my compressor, just ease into the trigger of the blow gun. But I'd heed Fred's warning above for heated grips!

Kinda confused on the tapping of aftermarket bars for the bar ends ----- weights / hand guards.

I see some have used a threaded nylon insert that requires a tap, to bolt the hand guards to the bars and others are just tapping the bars.

Are we talkin 2 different animals / year models, or ??

Gen 2 bikes have the hand guard bolted to the bar weight which is threaded in the bars, right?

Some use an expanding rubber plug, some use a nylon insert, some tap. For me, it was easier to just tap, that way I could use the OEM Handlebar weight. There is no difference in thread pitch or diameter of the bar end weight that I am aware of between Gen1 and Gen2 bikes.

Some hand guards come with different bolts to secure the guards to the bar ends. Highway Dirtbikes I believe use the insert you're referring to. I asked them about running their setup on the ADV Highbars and they said it was likely too much bend.

Thanks, not interested in using any other weights or hand guards than stock.
Just curious why some would choose to tap the aftermarket bars and run an insert rather than just tap the bars.

I'm looking at changing bars and want to go back with all the stock gadgetry in the least amount of pain.

Not much going on with one of my other bikes considering handlebar apparatus ! ::013::

Yes, there is a difference between gen 1 and 2. Gen 1 has a threaded nut tac welded inside the bars for a long screw to engage to hold the weight and fasten the guards. They need some sort of expanding wedge or a full on threaded insert for the bolt to screw into. The Gen 2's end weight is threaded into the bars, the bars must be threaded to use the gen 2 bar weights. Then a short screw holds to guards to the weight. Pretty slick, that gen 2 system, just not very user friendly to do swaps. If you like playing around with bar swaps, it might be easier to pick up a pair of gen 1 end weights, they're old school.

Thanks Don.

yeah I need to change bars. I've tried moving the stock bars around and have the 30mm risers and they still ain't gonna work for me.

High bars seem like they're in the same place as the Rox risers + low bars.
that being said, wouldn't the low + risers setup allow you to pivot the bars closer to you. You say you have short arms and that setup seems better to me.??
I know you've studied these things and tried both. I'm trying to picture it all in my punkin head.

I used these for my 2012 to Protaper Raptor bars. Worked good for the 45,000ish miles until I traded it in on a 2015 ES. Also needed to use a longer bolts I purchased at a local hardware store.

I am wondering if they will work if I install the Protaper Raptor bars on my 2015.
I'm pretty sure you would need the older style end weights... unless you went without which is an option.

Good talking to you Don. Now I understand.

Does anyone have stock 2014-15 handlebars they want to get rid of?
