morning all.

Can the smert guys chime in about an odd situation I'm being told about.

some time ago I did a major service on a buddy's tenere. Valves were adjusted 4 out of 8, couple of ex and a couple in.
plugs swapped, coolant, tb's synced.

He's reporting power loss at higher speeds, and a thirstier bike..

any thoughts?

Is my timing off by a tooth,
could it be that my throttle body sync is not quite right?
did I land one of the low voltage leads on the wrong high voltage spark plug cap?

da fug?

Typical of valve timing out. If you find it is, check the compression - it is possible to bend valves with wrong timing. NOT the throttle sync - that can be way out and make no difference to high speed, wide throttle openings.

I know for a fact the timing is not that far out. maybe a tooth on the intake.
My tenere skipped three teeth when adjusting my cct...no bent valves, thank jeebus

thanks for the feedback.
I was suspecting timing.

First and easiest step would be to get together and swap bikes. At least the power loss should be able to be identified with a good test ride of his bike compared to yours.

That does kind of uneven the playing field alright. :-\
Not a great pic, but this is what mine looked like after I removed the CCT before the valve adjust. You can see where the white paint marks that I put on for reference, and should line up.They were helpful to see that the intake cam had moved when the CCT was removed. Not sure how much this, if it is the problem will effect the engines running. If it would run at all, I would think it would effect the running from idle right through the RPM range.
Wires to the ignition coils are black to #1 and black with white tape to #2 coil. Black to #3 and black with white tape to #4 coil. Dosen't look like the wires and connectors are long enough to reverse 1&2 and 3&4.
With the bike rideable, it sounds like a little more trouble shooting is in order before you tear back into the valve timing though.

thanks Bernie,

the leads always cofused me.
I'll double check the leads before tearing into it.
I know that the cam cap mark, and the mark on the cap need to be lined up perfectly, that and the marks on the cam sprockets to be in line with the engine cases.

I have some time till the bike comes back.

do you think it could maybe be bad fuel? The bike started up nicely, revved up etc...again, I didn't have a chance to ride it.

I did that and trust me the bike will not run, it will cough and fart but not run.
The only leads that fit each other are the TB servo and the spark plug ones. Unfortunately they come off the loom at the same place.
I got mine mixed up and the bike just would not work.
