Potential S10 Owner but have a problem

Hello all, I really like the S10 and have been contemplating switching from my current ride, an '07 FJR but, I sat on one today and my knees are pretty much buried into the plastic of the body work. I am not super tall at 6'3" and I am fairly proportionate, are there any options out there to make adjustments to the bike? I did search here, as well as general google searches, and found nothing but a fair amount of comments about how there was plenty of leg room. My only thought so far is lowering the pegs maybe? Anyone else run into this?

Thanks in advance, Erik

If you're comfortable on an FJR I can't imagine you wouldn't find a sweet spot on a Tenere. I'm 6'6" and have no issue with the legroom or issue with the plastics. My suggestion would be take another sit on one and try different positions on the seat. That is one huge advantage of the Tenere, you can move around and aren't "locked" in one spot. My suspicion is you were very far forward on the seat and up close to the tank to have this issue. This isn't where I find myself riding. Of course you may have extremely long legs but again, if FJR works, a Tenere should be a slam dunk.

6'4" myself and for the way I am built this is what I did and its a perfect fit. SW Motech lowering pegs, handlebar risers 1 up and 1 back and I ride on the lower setting because I am tall but my inseam is only 33. Plenty of room to roam around.

I had an FJR on which I felt far too cramped up - even after installing bar risers and lowering the footpegs. Never got the ergos right on that bike.
I am 6'4'' with an inseam of 34''.
The only thing the ST needed for me was a 1'' up on the bars to fit perfectly.

Sounds like I need to resit on one, which wont happen until next weekend since I am heading out of town for work. I probably was sitting up on the tank a bit I suppose, more dirt bike like, which just felt natural to me when I got on the bike. I really like Yamaha in general, ever since my '84 XT600, and I like being able to find a dealer everywhere I go, something not as easy to do with BMW, Triumph, Ducati, Moto Guzzi etc. if it's the right bike, I would really like to own an S10. Going to arrange a test ride for when I get back and wiggle around a bit more.

Make sure the seat is in the high position when you sit on it again.

Good point, I forgot about that. Mine has never been in low position and never thought of that

I am a midget at 6'2, but have a 34" inseam, bike fits really well for me with seat on highest position.

Most likely try to sit on it like you would a sportsbike, give your nuts some breathing space and it will probably fit fine ::008::

My dealer finally got another S10 in so I got over there right away and sat on it. Took a pic to show where I am on the seat when my knees touch the plastic. What do you guys think? I have a test ride scheduled for early next week which will give me a better feel for things.

My same thought. The FJR is much lower.

It's not the height of the seat, it's where the bodywork is on the bikes. On the S10 where I am sitting in the picture, my knees are touching the plastic "shrouds".

I know exactly what you are saying. I sat on one a year ago and wrote it off that it would not work for me. It's a pet peeve of mine from other bikes. A few weeks ago I went and sat on one again. Said the same thing, but went back a week later to take a test ride because I still wanted one. I did not notice it one bit while I was riding it. I'm 6'3" with 34-36 inseam. I test rode with the seat in the down position, I put it to the up position afterwards and thought it would be better that way. I made sure I didn't slide to far up in the seat - When/if I do end up buying a Tenere I will be doing the seat level mod right away to prevent sliding forward.

What is this seat level mod that you speak of? Did a two- up 150 mi. ride this morning and kept thinking if this seat was a little higher in front it might work better for me.

I'm 6-2 and with the seat in the high position, I have to slide uncomfortably far forward before my knees contact the plastic bodywork. But your picture doesn't look like you're that far forward. You either have unusually long thighs or something is amiss in your seating position.

I'd definitely try and take a ride before declaring that it won't work. I used to own a FJR and the S10 has a lot more legroom. And a lot less heat in the cockpit.

As mentioned, don't forget that the stock seat is tilted forward a bit, and this might contribute to you sliding into the side panels. For me it was litterally a pain in the bollocks, until I did the mods to flatten the seat.

Well, I found 3 threads about it. There might be more, and I don't know which is preferred or better. I don't even have a Tenere at this time.

I am like 1tonn, same height and similar inseam. I have a test ride setup this week so I will know more after the ride, putting the seat in both positions. I really like the bike, I really like Yamaha, I really like the price, I really like the dealer network that you wont find with Ducati, BMW, KTM, Triumph etc. None of the other Japanese companies have anything to compare, except maybe the new VStrom that is on the way?
