Hello Fam, i am not officially a Super Tenere owner, but i am looking into one. I would like some advise.
I been doing research and it appears the 2014 model is greatly improved from the 2012. Sadly in Socal there is only 2016 versions. I love the yellow as well.
So my basic questions are, i have 1 year riding, i lost my fz09 recently due to a crash(not my fault)
I was always doing trips on the fz09, the fz09 community thought i was crazy, LA > SF , LA > PHX Etc.
I am looking for something slightly more comfortable and overall for my moto needs, commuting, road trips, getting into off roading ( no exp) City Riding.
I understand that going from the fz09 to the super tenere might be a big jump. I still have much to learn as well.
would you recommend i look into getting the 2012?(lower price off CL) or should i just look into getting the 2014- 2016 version( for about 3k more)
I am 24 Year old if that matters, 190lbs xD.
2012? and end up getting one for around 8k, or 2016 model and end up basicly broke?

Have you considered the FJ-09?
Same basic bike as FZ-09 you're familiar with.

Not that I consider the S10 bad. 2014 and up do have their advantages over the gen1.

Aside from relatively minor changes, the Gen I bikes, 2012-2013 are very similar to the Gen II bikes. The 2-14-on bikes have factory cruise control. Electronic Suspension is also available, which comes with factory heated grips.

I think you answered your own question though. Buy the 2012, there are plenty of good ones around, on this forum even, and a used bike with 7500 miles on it doesn't need to be a CA VIN bike to be registered in CA. At this point, you saved enough to keep taking those trips you enjoy.

Sure, you could look around for used 2014/15 bikes with over 7500 miles as well, but they will still cost more and that reduces your funds for trips. The newer bikes are smoother, but most of the vibration issues that riders notice don't start until 50-60k miles as the clutch wears more. And a Gen II clutch with nut & gasket is $300, which reduces the vibrations significantly. The only other issue is the cam chain tensioner, which was updated on the Gen II bikes and should be replaced on the Gen I bikes before 50k miles or when it starts to get noisy.

FWIW, I put 109k on my Gen I and recently sold it to get a Gen II. Subtle differences, but nothing earth shattering. I do like the factory CC though. :)

The price differences between them may be the deciding factor for you. If money is not really a specific concern, I would definitely go with a 2014+ Just for the facts listed above, but for me it was about having Cruise Control and Heated Grips. I do a lot of winter riding and commuting and stuff, but for the times when I want to do some touring I really, REALLY love the built in cruise control.. it works very well! I decided to go for the ES feature as well since I wanted to spoil myself... no regrets!!

Based on the fact that you have been riding for 1 year, I will assume that the FZ09 has been your only bike.

Many of us can afford only one bike, so buying the wrong one can turn out to be an expensive test ride. So I would definitely recommend getting a test ride of some length before buying; it can do a lot to prevent buyers remorse later.

It shouldn't be hard at all to score a test ride on a used Super Tenere. I think EricV's advice is sound on getting the used one, Cruise Control is nice but over rated. But try to get a test ride on an FJ09 as well as a few other bikes just to do some comparisons. It will help you to decide what features/ergos etc. are important to you.

Hope that helps! Happy Hunting!

Welcome to the site.

I'm down in San Diego. For what it's worth, you can buy a 2012 or 2013 for $6000-6500 if you're patient. It'll have low miles (<20k) and likely be pretty stock, but that'll allow you to customize it however you see fit.

I second Ace's recommendation of the FJ09. More comfortable than the FZ, while still maintaining some of the same performance characteristics.

And then the big difference I see is that it's a ton lighter and more nimble than the S10. As much as I love my new bike, it's not what I'd first choose as a commuter and city bike.

There's a huge size difference between the FZ09 and the Super Tenere (there are both in the family here). It's like going from a Medium to a XXL Tall.

Definitely try to find a used one at a dealer and take a test ride. Depending on your riding skill and comfort level on bikes since you've only been riding one year, the Super Tenere might be a bit intimidating.

I bought a new 2013 and killed it around 40,000 miles. Bought another new 2015. If anything I think the cruise was UNDERRATED. I thought it would be something I used infrequently. I was wrong. I absolutely love cruise control. Hands down the best thing to happen to the Tenere and not just for the slab.

I can understand the idea of Saving Money Now and purchasing a 2012-2013. I would take the 2013 over the 2012. But... in a year or three when you want to sell the 2012-2013 you probably will lose most of the purchase price. If it were me I would spend the money now on a newer Gen2 and have it worth more when I was going to sell it.

+ 2015 ES sits much better than the 2012 I had. + The forks are different/better. + Cruise Control. + Mirrors. + Heated grips. + Adjustable windshield. + Aluminum handlebars. + 4-way flashers. + LED flashers.

Congrats on your new ride. I agree, cruise control is not be over rated. But I think ALL bikes should have cruise and heated grips.
