Possible move from Southern California to north Texas

As it does, my life has change and not according to the plans of my wife and I ( with 2 kids in tow). For the most part all is good but it has given us the opportunity to completely up root our lives to north Texas out side Dallas/ Fort worth in flower mound.

I know this group is from all over and wanted to get any thoughts or considerations from those who have lived, are living or thinking about moving to North Texas. Doesn't have to be related to motorcycling.

Obviously one of the most important things to me is motorcycling. I have over 10 years 150k miles under my belt.
Are there any good runs around( doable in one day, or half half day)? I know 2 day runs are pretty awesome ( my dad lives here and has a gold wing)

Thank you all in advance,
Ryan

The roads west & sw ofFt Worthless are great... especially Somervell & Hood counties for paved.... Bosque & Erath for more gravel.
I live outside of Waco & have my choice of these ...& tons more all up & down I35 west to US281 generally & south to Kerrville
Much fun

Moved from So Cal to Fort Worth back in the 80's. Lived there for 5 years and enjoyed the people there. Downtown Fort Worth is a great place to go eat and safely walk around. TCU Football games are cheap and fun to attend and they play in the Big12 so a lot of big name teams go through there.

There are a lot of rural roads that lead to nice lakes. If you like to bass fish that's a bonus. Can't beat the Hill Country down south (and a little west).

Have a great time.

I can't compare it to California, having never lived or ridden there, but I enjoy day tripping around Lake Ray Roberts and west/northwest of there. Of course it may be like when I learned to downhill ski in Wisconsin and thought it was great until I experienced something better in the Rockies. If you make the move and feel like day tripping, PM me.

Lived in El Cajon for years......not in TX but I am in the south. Low Taxes and cost of living will save you enough money that IF you do feel saddened by the move you will have plenty of money to go for a visit.

I doubt that will be the case, Arkansas is close and has TONS to offer, OK is not bad either. If you do go West (out of state) the Continental Divide is 8 hrs-ish drive.

Enjoy the move it is coming anyways..............

I appreciate all the replies guys. Really making me more excited in terms of the motorcycle and moving.

How many riding days/weeks/months can I expect to lose to weather ( I ride year round here, 32 degrees to 100), rain if it isn't a real storm etc?

Ha, my hometown is San Marcos. Worked in Escondido, starting at Rube Nelson's store if you remember that far back!!
Moved to Arlington, TX in 1977, and have never been sorry. I do miss some of the amazing scenery and different venues, ie, mountains, desert, beaches, but certainly do not miss the huge population. Amazing riding out to Ramona, Julian, and Borrego desert. I hope to get out there and ride some of that area, bucket list.
Summer is a bit, uh, warm, ok, HOT. But I still love it here. Nice riding in the area. We haul bike to Colorado each summer for a couple weeks, and fall trip to Arkansas. As was pointed out above, NW Arkansas is excellent riding.
Good luck to you and hope you can get away from the high taxes out there. ;D

Native Texan here, have lived all over the state. You'll get a huge raise, as COL is low - housing, taxes, etc. Plenty of great MC trips - Twisted Sisters, Big Bend, Palo Duro Canyon, east Texas lakes, not far from NM and CO, not far from the Ozarks, and while not a simple weekend trip, reasonable distance to the Tail of the Dragon and other Tennessee, North Carolina awesome bike trips, including dual sport/adventure rides, etc. Business friendly state, decent family values and pro 2nd amendment. Biggest downside is traffic, but you're already in the thick of that. Enjoy!

If you limit yourself to day or 1/2 day rides, then it's usually best to go north. Between the metroplex and the red river are quite a few roads that many of us use on the weekends. Sherman to Whiteright (TX 697), Weston road (TX 455), Gainsville (TX 373), just to name a few. If you can give yourself 2-3 days, then either go south to hill country or head to Arkansas. Arkansas has some of the best roads in the nation for bikes, it just doesn't have the scenery of say Co or UT.

I've been riding out of North TX for 30+ years. I've also kept bikes in San Jose, Ca so I know the NorCal roads a little. My only problem with Ca is the traffic (both bicycles and cars).

There are good roads in Texas, mainly down & around Kerrville. I was stationed in San Diego for about a year. In my opinion, the roads over by Julian, and Borrego Springs are fantastic. And they're right about the C.O.L. You will be able to get twice the house for half the price. I always figured that was the cost of perfect, year round weather in So Cal.

Honestly I did think of this and it's a plus. I've wanted to visit the shop while visiting family but hard to explain to the wife why I want to go see a random Moto shop while on vacation in state I do not know anyone.

Again I appreciate the replies. Really putting my mind at ease. I will most definitely be calling on the natives to show me some roads and if anyone is daring enough... show me where and how to take the beast off road!

Lutsie -

We had a nice breakfast and ride out on Sunrise Highway last year. I remember you being the youngster of the group. My riding has really dropped off since then for various reasons and the guy who organized that ride (SPX on the forum) sold both of his Teneres and moved back to BMWs. So sadly not much action locally in the last year.

Just wanted to say hi and wish you the best with your move. Hard to beat the variety of Southern Cal (terrain, climate, people, activities, etc), but Texas will be a huge upgrade in terms of sane politics, at least from my perspective. My wife is from Texas and everything attracts me about that state except the weather. I'm leaning further north, but will definitely migrate out of California at some point.

Bob

Catching up on the forum and out of the ether comes a flurry of posts from snakebitten! Welcome back, my man. You know this place is not the same without you. Hope all is well.

Good to see you're still lurking, Josh! I had a hard time keeping up with you on your Tenere, so probably no chance with you on a GS. In fact the hard scraping (by me) while chasing you on Highland Valley Road led me to take a hard look at my suspension. Finally doing something about it, still in progress. I'll ping you next year about a ride. Maybe try to pull together more of the locals as as well, like Tubebender.

Yeah, I'm still here. Went to the Flying Monkey Rally a couple of months ago and headed to Death Valley end of Jan.
Send me a text or PM.

Will do, Carl. Glad to hear you're gettin' out there! I've been pretty dormant for a while. Hoping things get better in 2017. Merry Christmas!
