Re: PIAA lights alternative mounting location

OK for those of you that don't yet have your bikes all of this will be meaningless. So this is the subject illustrated with pics.

The bike has a set of lugs up under the headlight unit designed to take a pair of fog/spots. (They're about inline with the crash bar below the chin ... see the bottom pic). This pic shows the mounting holes on one side. Decent heavy duty stuff they are too.

I've got 12' of the Dual lock, great stuff. You have to use a pliers sometimes to get things apart.

you will also see Dual Lock marketed as "Super Lock". This stuff is the bomb and I always have extra in my tool box. As mentioned - the glue (to borrow a phrase) is strong with this one !

Be careful on what you mount it. The first time I ever used the stuff I put a 1" wide strip about 3" long on a radar detector. When I took the detector off - I actually ripped the base of the case away from the top. THAT is how strong it is. I usually cut 1" strips (standard width is about 1"). They also make it in a clear version so you don't have to use Black - but it is still pretty obvious on the bike. Since most of my mounts and locations on my FJR are black... I stay with that color.

Dual Lock is GREAT stuff. Highly recommended - just be careful on how much you use and on what.

That's it then just ordered my new auxillary lights. They are the standard Yamaha fitment. Having them mounted to the engine bars on rubber mounts. Just fitted the Super Tenere tank pad. It's all getting better ;D

The tank pad is really cool ... matt, textured, thick and flat in grey/black.
Swagger, Do you still have the installation instructions for your PIAA lights?
Would it be possible to scan and post them here?
Thanks.

Sorry to wake this topic up again.....

My one PIAA fog light broke recently (after 17 months use - 19 000km) - see pic below
I've heard that quite a lot of other S10 owners have had the same failures.

Put in a warranty claim with Yamaha and they were promptly replaced ::008::
The problem just is, the new ones seem to have exactly the same design as the old ones and I'm expecting them to also not last, with the difference that they won't be replaced again... ::007::

If PIAA is such a quality company, I would have expected them to recall, or modify the design, NO?

If you like the PIIAs why not replace them with these? Come complete with Guards. 35W= 60 W
might consider that if Yamaha refund me, which I doubt the buggers will do ::010::

Cool! I will definitely check that out. I know of one other forum member who has the 530's, but he hasn't provided any impressions.

I would be that forum member! No impressions of the 530 yet as my bike is in NH at the Micatech plant being fitted for their Pilot mounts and cases. I went with the 530s as a low draw conspicuous "do you see me?" light, which for that purpose they'll be fine. Not sure if I'm going to keep them under the headlight though,as I'd like more seperation

The PIAA 530 LED lights just arrived today UPS. I will be installing these sometime this week after I caulk the tub/shower, install new door locks, and install a closet door. And of course tomorrow if VALENTINES DAY if you guys are sleeping at this time!!! If I try to install the lights first I may be a dead man!!! SO, I hope to have some info to you all this week. These will be the FOG pattern, not the Driving pattern!!! That may be an option later!! All I have to say is 6000k color!!!!! That is going to be awesome!!!!

Jeff,
Were these the Tenere kit you talked about in an earlier post?

Kev,
they are not the Tenere specific kit I mentioned earlier. They are just the light kit i am using on my OEM Yamaha fog light brackets and wiring. I will get more info as to when the kit will be available to buy in the USA.

So I was going to order the PIAA lights and bracket from yamaha but from what I understand, I would need to "splice" into the bikes harness for installation. I heard that there are European yamaha PIAA lights that come with a "plug in" light harness right into the bikes harnes thus not needing to "splice in" the lights.

So when I order the yamaha lights will I have to "splice in" of "plug in" these lights or do I have to get the European OEM lights? The next questions is, does my USA 2014 ES have the ability to "plug in" the lights?

TIA

Howdy,
What ever you are installing for driving/fog lights there is an OEM connector under the right cover, lower right corner next to the heated grip connector. It is wired with a 20 amp fuse in the fuse box. I installed the Power Sport version but instead of adding another set of ring lungs on my battery I ordered the OEM matching connector from Eastern Beaver. Cut out the provided in line fuse from the PIAA harness, crimped in the new pins and connector and now have a factory perfect waterproof connection.
Later,
Norm
PS do a search and you'll find the correct connector to order from Eastern Beaver and the needed wiring diagram, sorry I'm old.

If your ES has the same harness connectors as earlier models, then it should be a piece of cake....
