PCV with dyno tune map

Wheelers cycle in Robinsville, NC turned my bike Tuesday. IT has a Arrow header ,Two Brothers slip on , K & N air filter. and CJM. On Ken's dyno base line pass was 87 HP and after tuning had 95 hp. His dyno normally reads 10% less than DynoJet brand dyno's. At 4000 rpm picked up 12 fts of torque. Was snowed in Wednesday but have about 1200 miles in the last few days and I am very happy with the bike. Mine did not really have any issues I was looking to correct just wanted to get the most out of the bike.
It pullers much better and is noticeable smoother. At 3000 to 4000 rpm the engine just purrs and has much better snap. I spent a lot of time on the fire roads in the national forest and was very good. Most of the time in 2nd or 3rd low rpm's, never stumbled or loaded up. I very happy with the bike and feel it was a good investment for $600 to purchase the PCV and the dyno tune session. I did check my mileage and I average 42 mpg.

Those are some pretty good number improvements...I contacted the the only non-harley motorcycle shop in town about a dyno session and they no longer do them. You think I'd get strange looks if I scheduled something with the harley dealer and rolled up on my "ricer"? :D

Couple of Dyno shops down here by me. One fella is very good at the v-twins but i would have no problem having him work on mine. I still need to call him about my bike this spring.

I did not even ask for a copy of my map so I cannot share it. If you already have a PCV installed you should be able to find a shop that can dyno tune your bike for $250 or less. Not much more than an auto tune unit from Power Commander. If you have not been to western NC and visited the dragon and all of the great dual sport raods in the region plan a trip soon and stop by Wheleers for your own tuning session. Just make sure you schedule weeks in advance! He has KLR's for rent in the summer if you schedule ahead or you can hang out for 5 to 6 hours while he works, PS rent a KLR.

Ken, please clarify for me. You had the Arrow headers, TB slip-on, K&N, and jumper mod already on the bike when you got the 87hp readout? Then you bought the PC-V and dyno tune at Wheelers?

If the PCV is like I remember it (had one on my old xt660z) you can connect it to a PC and extract the map using the free dynojet tools. It would be a good idea to do this regardless so you have a backup copy should your PCV ever go Tits up and lose its settings.

That is correct. Bike ran ok but would back fire some on decel and wanted to make sure it was not running lean or rich.

The exact question I was getting ready to ask. So I suppose a bike with the CAT and OEM muffler would read in the lower 80's somewhere. I recall seeing something around 84hp from the Euro model in OEM configuration. Good stuff! Be careful about telling some of the forum members that Dyonjet dynos typically read higher than other brands. Kees (Blue eyes) blood used to boil when he heard that 8)

Guys do get charged up over hp numbers! The real test is a 1/4 mile run to see which bike is pulling better. I just wanted to advise that the dyno used was a eddy current type and they normally read lower. I think some shops add some gain to the dyno output to help keep the customers happy ::015::

Figures sound about right, mine showed 86BHP stock, and 92BHP with just arrow headers (with stock muffler) on a Dynojet Dyno and they tend to read fairly high compared to some dyno's. My ZZR1400 Showed 174.5 on a Dynojet, but only 166 on a Dynapro.

Your bike must feel awesome now ::008::

It is just about perfect, any more power would be a waste for 95% of the time.

Just got my bike back and had virtually the same numbers, have a full Arrow system, air filter,PC, reflash. Had 89 hp before the tune, and 97hp after. Very smooth of idle when letting the clutch out, I was having some popping on decel, that is gone. Air mixture was very lean in the lower numbers before tune. Worth the trouble, you can feel motor is way smoother thru the range.

very cool - just goes to show that anytime you can get dyno time with the PCV it's very helpful.


even if you got/passed up the autotune with it, the dyno session will help get your baseline map dialed in. So for the autotune users, it doesn't have to go through several trim iterations to achieve target AFR's. the autotune will only be as good as your baseline pcv map is.
