Hoping someone has done this before (as per Jim/EB he's never been asked that question :(

I have the PC-8 with the S10 specific harness, and plan on connecting the PC-8 switched trigger lead to the bike's 3-prong aux light connector and use a manual switch to operate the lights. I've seen multiple posts suggesting different solutions for similar setups, but was hoping to get the following questions answered by riders who're happy with their installation:

What do you do with the light kit's switched lead? (suggestions ranged from: splice and forget/connect to a switched positive port on the PC-8/connect to the SAME switched positive port where the kit's positive lead is connected - thereby saving a switched port).

What do you do with the light kit's relay? (suggestions were: keep it/discard that part of the harness)

What do you do with the light kit's inline fuse? (suggestions were: keep it at 20A/keep it at 15A/cut it out of the lead)
Thanks!

Shaq

1. The switched lead should be the one to activate the relay in the harness. This will go to the manual switch you want.
2. Keep the relay; it is the easiest way to use a manual switch.
3. I would match whatever fuse was in the wire harness for the light kit for use in the PC8; you won't need to keep the inline fuse.

By aux light, are you using the Yamaha specific PIAA kit? I have the PC8 and Baja Designs OnX Light Bar on my 2012, and here is how I wired it:

1) Switched output of the PC8 to terminal 30 (or 87) on a Bosch style relay. By using a switched output, the light will not turn on without the key. You do have the option of using one of the unswitched ports, if you want to be able to turn on the lights without the key on.
2) Relay output (terminal 30 or 87, whichever one you didn't use above) to the hot wire on the OnX
3) Handlebar mounted switch (in my case, the unused hazard button on a Kawasaki Versys left switch cluster that I changed over to; details on that mod HERE) wired to terminal 85 or 86 on the relay. The other terminal can be wired to either ground or 12v, and the 2nd terminal of the switch will go to either 12v (if you ground from the relay) or ground (if you apply 12V to the relay).

If you do a Google search for Bosch Relay, you will find wiring diagram examples...

Update: installed lights last night as follows:
1. Ditched the PIAA switch portion of the harness (including the 2amp fuse).
2. Connected POS from PC8 (switched, with 2amp fuse) > new light switch > POS lights (using the PIAA harness portion that splits the wires to both lights). Neg from PC8 directly to lights via same harness portion.

No relay (figured for 0.5amp so not needed?).

Works. Let it run for 30 min, checked contacts - none heated.

Makes sense?

As long as it works the way you want it, you're good! The biggest reason for the relay is to use a low current circuit to switch a high current circuit.

Hi all,
I'm considering the Eastern Beaver PC-8 with Relay Kit and wiring harness for my 2012. I currently have a GPS and heated grips jury-rigged in and want to get a capable setup to add lights, etc.
Any other reviews or opinions on the PC-8 with Relay Kit, other than those above? Looks like a good setup for a reasonable price. I would use more than $100 worth of time trying to piece together a wiring harness.
Thanks
Willb

I have the PC-8 harness for the ST and it saved me lots of time wiring up all the stuff I've added to my bike. The time savings alone was worth it, not to mention the reliability of having everything everything done right all in one place.

I have:
heated grips (Oxford premium adventure)
two gps 12v wired leads
lead for heated gear
2 LED aux lights powered by a Skene controller that powers the LEDs at 10% when on low beam and 100% at high beam (triggered off high beam wire)
Extra 12v socket on dash fill panel that is live all the time and has a higher rated wire and fuse that stock socket
LED voltage meter on dash panel
smartphone 12v charging cable in top case
The only thing not going through the PC-8 is a SAE plug led directly to the battery for charging and jumping. I've jumped other bikes twice in the last year.

All the wiring goes to the same spot and is easy to work on and/or add more stuff.

;-) Paul

Hey Willb,

There's a mess of Teneres with the PC8 onboard. A bunch! Pretty common addition from the early history of rigging these bikes for pack mule status.
Don't recall anyone not happy with it. It's well thought out and even has a perfect location and bike specific harness available.

Bing this phrase: PC8 site:yamahasupertenere.com

Lots of great pics too!

Where are you guys mounting the PC-8 on the ES bikes? I have not been able to find a great spot. Not much room under the seat with the ES computer there. I may install it where the tool kit is normally stowed.

I don't have an ES but on the 2014 standard and pre-2014 models you can install behind the upper side plastic. There's a plastic divider there that you can cut out so the PC-8 fits. I did that and used Velcro and have had zero problems.

Unfortunately, there is a big relay located there on the ES models.

Many thanks, Pnelson and Snakebitten, for your replies to my post #6 above. I'm going to order the PC-8/harness kit soon. The list of your mods helped me remember the other things I already have hooked up that I had forgotten, including a USB socket and an SAE connector for heated gear. The PC-8 will be well utilized.
