Bumped into a friend's bike today. Dented his pannier...

Destroyed my front fender, so I need one of those.

Destroyed that central dash support under the speedo/tach unit, so I need one of those.

Not sure what else is cracked yet...sigh.

Hit this thread or PM me if you have these parts available, unbroken. ;)

Yeah, "crashed against", "plowed into" and "almost ran over" all seemed a bit dramatic... ;)
Was riding my cruiser with a friend I had not seen for 20 years. Met him near the Maine and NH line. He was leading me on roads I would never have known existed. We pulled up at a T intersection with a car coming from the left and I thought I heard his Harley take off. It was borderline but we can make it, so I start to take off. Put on throttle, start to let the clutch out, raise the right leg, look to the right and he is STILL THERE. Fall onto his Harley.

He has to raise his pipe a half inch. That pipe breaks my right lower. Those from Yamaha are $900 a pair with primer.

My fairing hit his trunk. No damage to his trunk. Thought there was just a small scratch to my fairing. Who cares.

Now my Strat is somewhat special as it was the First Strat Deluxe made and I got it from Mama Yama with a custom paint job. So I get back from Star Days 2013 and find the fairing is busted. Multiple mount points are broken. This is the Second Custom Paint job for this bike. That one was done by an LA Movie Bike Painter. My local painter, who is great, says I am not sure I can match those 9 custom colors. So I make the decision to repaint the entire bike. Between the lower (which my painter fixes) and the original custom paint the insurance pays about 4K of the $5k paint job I ended with. (Paint cost $400 an ounce!)

So that was why I asked and totally understand.

Now all that said, I have a 2014 ES in the gray and really like that it can get dirty, ride on salty winter streets, mud, or whatever and a quick wash, not an hour polishing paint or chrome, is all it takes for the next ride.

The central dash support is also known as the Windscreen Assembly (since that is what it holds in addition to the gauges). It's not an expensive part from Yamaha, but I did find a new part number for it: 23P-28356-01-00

You should find it for around $80

Thanks geek! I was looking through parts online last night, just couldn't identify that item. OK, with a part number, we're in business. :)

And thanks for the story Bob. Shame things like this happen. People say things happen for a reason, but beyond enabling me to spend money on his bike, I'm failing to see "the reason" at the moment. OK, there was the added moment of clarity around keeping situational awareness, but surely the cosmos could have found a gentler example? This one nearly made my friend crap his pants. Grateful, however, it is just plastic and metal, as escapefjrtist mentions.

Despite the bent beak, the ST completed the day with narry a bobble, racking up ~300 miles of highway, canyon strafing and back wood single lanes before getting me home. We saw a float plane practicing touch and goes on a lake at Snoqualmie Pass, rock climbers about 300 feet up a cliff face outside Gold Bar and enjoyed awesome cookies at the Sultan Bakery. Topped off with a jaunt across Ben Howard Rd, a local fave, it was an excellent day of riding.

Damn, Duane, you really ARE a bad motorcycle parent!! :D

Just kidding, man. Sorry to hear about your "bump". Sucks to have your first ride after such a long layoff end like that. Revenge of the neglected Tenere???

Please post video if you have it, for educational purposes of course.

Yeah, zero mph dropped my 500 mile '14 into a parked car and broke mine... shining moment for myself. You'll shit by the time you've got it all apart to change... lotsa parts, but real easy work.

I've heard a rumor that people living near San Diego sucked. that there were simply mean spirited, soul sucking rubber neckers always happiest when watching videos of someone else's mishaps. I refused, no, I REFUSED to believe it. I'd never encountered suck evil on any of my days on Earth...until today. ;)

Alas, arjayes, no video exists. Dave steadfastly was against a video camera, stating "I'd just film my own demise...". Then, naturally, he happened across a good deal on a GoPro, so he bought one, so he could "film his own demise". Normally, I would have fired up my own GoPro but we were just going to be cruising some known roads, so what's worth videoing? Instead I opted to recharge my Delorme InReach Satellite tracker/receiver/SOS-er unit. It hadn't seen power in about a year, so I figured why not juice it up? Lo and behold, now granted, it'd been sitting "OFF" that whole time, it still had 63% of it's last charge! After all the temp fluctuations in the garage, it was still mostly charged! WOW!

Bottom line was...the GoPro stayed in he cabinet for another time.

Now, I *could* charge everyone five bucks and give them a peak inside my mind to see the endless reel that are those moments replaying over and over, but then you'd likely see all the rest of the shit I've got lying around in my head, too...no beuno for anyone, IMO. ;)

Just now a better idea occurred to me - better than buying parts to fix the ST, that is...

I shall fill the cavity with spray foam, let it expand, cut enough back for steering movement and begin fibreglassing the bejesus out of it! By the time I'm done, Craig Vetter will be proud! I envision a cross between a hypermiling 125 cc moped, a Dakar bruiser and a medium range missile, circa 1968. It'll flatten mountains, reach 100+ MPG while doing so and be so sleek radar can't keep up!

Or maybe I'll just part the bike out...

So far, the part you note, I'm seeing at $67 today. But I'm not entirely sure it's that part I need. I simply don't know. Really, I need to disassemble the bike, THEN start shopping for parts, rather than half-ass my attempts at describing what I think it could be. Plus, that's only what's visible...so disassembly is definitely the way forward... or, spray foam...

Fender seems to be hovering around the $99 mark, though it doesn't state if that's painted or raw. I suspect it's painted as I'm searching in the section FOR blue bikes on this site...but who knows...

Yeah, most people in San Diego are total dicks. The foul weather brings out the worst in us!! >:D

If it's any solace, I did an epic face plant on my KTM out in the desert about six weeks ago. I don't think one piece on the right side of the bike escaped some kind of damage (mostly cosmetic except for the handlebars and right hand guard), and I got dinged pretty good as well. Right hip and shoulder (and helmet) took the brunt of it. For about a month my hip felt like it had a lb of raw hamburger attached to it. A swollen and numb pad about the size of my hand, maybe 1" thick, rose up over the first 3-4 days after the crash. Not super painful but very weird. Took forever for that thing to dissipate. Shoulder is still bothering me. No idea what I damaged because I didn't go to the doc. Hopefully nothing permanent. At 20 I probably would have laughed it off, but at 56 it doesn't work that way any more!

No video of my mishap either, which is too bad because I would love to see it unfold in slow motion. Still have no clue exactly what happened so my only lesson learned is to SLOW DOWN in the rough stuff!!

Well, at least I didn't hit anybody else! (Sorry, couldn't resist!)

Good luck with fixing the damage. So far sounds like you may get off pretty cheaply. ::008::

(weird - just dropped the URL in here, yet it wouldn't parse - added URL tags, but no inserted video...hmmm...BTW - the video URL I'm seeing in my browser on YT IS the https version...)

Scratched the crash bar.
Scratched the nub on the kick stand.
Bent the shifter connecting rod.
