Panniers Questions!!

I'm sure there is a chance one of these questions have been asked and answered before but I'm new to this forum and still trying to figure things out... please be gentle ;)

1. As far as I know we're only able to buy the white OEM side/top cases for the super tenere. However, the same cases are being sold in Europe with the option of white or black... What hoops do I need to jump through to get a full set of black ones over to the US?

2. How much do larger panniers, such as the touratech 38/45 liter side and top panniers, effect handling at higher speeds? Obviously, weight can be a problem if I load them up too much, but except for that, what else do I need to know?

As always, thanks for the help :)

They're sold only in alum color in the US. You might be able to get a dealer overseas to sell/ship you a set (technically, they're not supposed to), but it would probably be cheaper just to paint a US set.

All luggage tends to result in some handling deterioration. Beyond this general statement, it is a matter of degrees. The larger the luggage, the less aero it is, the higher it sits on the bike, and the further aft it sits, the more it affects the handling. This being said, properly installed high-quality luggage, OEM or aftermarket, loaded within reasonable limits should be Okay at anything other than the far corners of the envelope. I'd advise you to buy luggage you like and suits your carrying needs, then accept whatever handling compromise results.

Also, if you're concerned about handing, skip the top box first as it is the one that typically causes the most change. Almost any side case luggage, not matter how big, is going to be less noticeable than any top box, even the OEM one.

I do think the OEM luggage, with its smaller size, tighter fit, lighter weight, and lower weight limits will effect handling less than some of the aftermarket stuff. Just be sure it is big enough and understand it is light duty stuff, most suited to pavement rather than serious bashing about in the bush with the associated crashing.

You will feel a difference with any panniers, but the S10 is one of the most stable-when-loaded bikes I've ridden. I have some very large panniers for my longer trips that I carry along with a top case , and the handling is definitely affected, but the bike still does surpisingly well considering the added wind resistance and load. I pack enough stuff to fill all three cases, but try not to be overly stupid about the weight of what I pack. I've traveled at a pretty good clip on less-than-smooth expressways, with an occasional spirts to greater than 100MPH with no issues. I would call it 'safe' but much less than optimum. I only travel with this type of load occasionally though. If you plan to do a large chunk of your riding loaded with cases, I advise that you least get the proper spring rates front and rear because the although the OEM with handle the load "OK" you can definitely do a lot better.

The black sets are available now from Canadian dealers. Check yamaha-motor.ca See they show a few of the worldcrosser accessories now as well.

I've got the really big MuffinTop panniers, with the 52L Givi Maxi top box and had them loaded to the hilt for our 10,000 mile ride this summer.

The biggest impact of the side boxes is getting on and off. The tall bike makes them just easier to hit with a boot. As for riding on sporting roads, they make the bike slightly slower in handling when compared to having them off the bike. They add to stability, making the bike need a slight bit more input to maneuver.

I almost always have the big top box on and it's frequently way over the recommended weights, when carrying laptop, books, tools, etc. The point is that unless the bike is static and leaned over, the big Givi box makes absolutely no difference in handling through the bikes potential range of speed for me. Even with the load so far aft, I've - ahem -heard (?) that it will make no difference at more than 115 mph GPS speed on an open desert road. Zero - Zilch - Nada. And it can still hold two helmets or a helmet, gloves, and big jacket. The Yam top box usually can fit a single helmet, but not always.

One thing to note is that the Givi is a bit more rounded and aerodynamic than the Yamaha-provided cube.

As for colors, any painter with access to powder coating can change the Yamaha boxes to any color you'd like.

Agree with the stable comment above. Here's my S10 loaded for this past long weekend camping run to north central pa. touratech 38/45, yammi top box. seat bag and the yammi tank bag. although had nothing but a light jacket in the top box. use it to store gear and pick up food/beverage.

on the tarmac no problem at all. on the mud of the forest road it had a bit of a wallow!

To terrisig and all that might know - Will a helmet fit in the Yamaha OEM top box-? I have a Shoei RF1100 myself. I am thinking it's better than carrying it around or locking it the way I do now.

Thanks in advance.

Yes.

I have a shoei (??) Flip Up. It fits fine a little sideways. Lid touches it when closed.

The handling will be most affected by weight, especially in a top box which is why I just throw spare gloves / visors / earplugs / jumper in mine (i.e. light stuff I may need to get out quickly)

I have 37L / 45L Sw-Motech panniers, these have room for two people to tour with, whereas the Yamaha ones measly 62L are gonna be a struggle IMO, the extra 1/3rd capacity is needed by me. For solo use all of your luggage will still be less weight than a pillion which the bike handles OK (Assuming your both fairly light)

Two-up and loaded the rear shock is gonna struggle, I fitted a Wikburs with a slightly stiffer spring (and it has much better damping characteristics) and the bike now handles fantastically even two-up with luggage. When compared to the cost of the bike and luggage this is a small additional outlay that just makes every ride that bit better (or a lot better if trying to hustle a fully loaded bike & pasenger down a winding road)

DT, unfortunately my every day wear xl shoei x12 does not. although i have a couple off brands that do but contact the lid slightly. My plan was the same as yours and the same thing i did with my fjr topbox but the s10 box is not big enough for larger helmets.

I bought the Givi Trekker 52L just for this reason. I can fit my MultiTec and my wife's full face in this thing no problem.....

Thats too bad. Thanks terrysig. Mine is a XL. Maybe I'll try to find one to test locally to be sure.
The Givi Trekker 52L sounds cavernous for sure or you two have little heads :) If my math conversion is correct the Yamaha box at 830 cu inches is a mere 14 liters. Plenty for many things but not my helmet.
best,

I also have the Trekker 52. It is great for storing the helmets when we are away from the bike and it looks good.

I just bought a new to me ST with the OEM side bags but no top box. Are any of you guys using the 52L Givi with the OEM bags? Any suggestions? I find the top box to be a must have....

This is my first week of ownership and I am loving this bike!!

I have the 52L Monokey GIvi mounted on an Altrider rack along with the OEM side cases. I already had the Givi from another bike which is why I went with this setup.
On trips I will mount all the cases and it works well except the side boxes won't open with the top box mounted.
This was easy enough to work around on my trip out west but it did get old at times.

For my daily commute I run with either the side boxes or top but not both.

Here is a picture with all three boxes minus the duffell that had my camping gear in.

Does anyone make a higher rear rack that allows the side cases to open with the Givi top box installed?
