I have the OEM panniers and used to think they created a drag, then I figured the additional packed weight. Like the profile and strength of the Jesse Safari 9" panniers.

I can get the interest and challenge in wanting to reduce drag, but isn't this a poster child for the point of diminishing return?

I suppose that when every reasonable effort to reduce the drag is in effect then any subsequent change will certainly demonstrate the "p.o.d.r.".
Got the Pelicans mounted last Monday and the weather gods allowed it to be ridden yesterday. I was messin' around with my clutch hand to feel where the wind was flowing and found that it is very strong just outside my leg then hitting the bag HARD about 6 inches into the box. That's a lot of additional drag added by the box and there's just no way to get around it - it takes more energy to move that box through the air.
There's GOT to be a way to get to "p.o.d.r.", but I'm not there yet. Wish I was smarter and able to fabricate a leading edge airfoil just to see if there'd be any improvement.

Your thoughts are in the right place to be sure. That transition boundary to the left is also a useful place to warm your left hand if needed. May the weather Gods continue to favor you.

Ya' think these might be better?

Nah... Probably a bit too much frontal area, and the CD can't be too good, either... ::025::
