A tree broke in half in the yard this weekend, and it is a rather big one. Estimates for clean up are coming in at around $4K!

That isn't that "GRANT TREE" the goverment gets all there funds from is it :D

Must be a good sized tree, in a small lot, and requires a bucket truck.

Actually, the one tree was just the beginning. I bought this place 4 years ago because of the 6 huge live oak trees in the yard, but I did not realize the cost of maintaining the trees. After quoting $800 for the split tree, which was not a live oak, the first tree guy pointed out numerous problems in the live oaks that, if not corrected soon, would result in losing 3 or 4 of them in a few short years. They are all 150 - 200 years old and I don't want to be faced with a yard full of dead live oaks, so even though I don't consider myself a tree hugger, I will reluctantly have to divert some of my bike funds to save a few. :(

This may be totally legit, but my experience is to always get multiple estimates and recommendations with tree work. This is work with a high degree of variability and the folks in this line of business, while most are hard working, are not exactly rocket scientists. I've had problems where one guy says I need $5K of work, another the same but for $1500, and a third says I need nothing. Good luck,

- Mark

Ah, that does make more sense.. lol. I don't blame you for trying to save your trees, they make up a large part of property values here. I have 11 acres and about 75 mature oaks and pecans. It does get $$$ trying to keep them all healthy, but it is worth it.
I finally got my pesticide license and now the only cost is the chemicals.
Good luck with yours..

I know what you mean. I had a big triple trunk laurel oak die on me a year after I moved in. I had estimates from $1300 up to $4000 to remove just that one tree! I ended up hiring the $1300 guy and I paid him a $200 tip. This most recent estimate covers the removal of the split tree, the removal of the trunk left from the triple trunk, the removal of another trunk that is about 8 feet tall, and cleaning of several dozen dead branches from the remaining live oaks, some of which are 12 or more inches in diameter. It will take 3 or 4 days for his crew to get this work done, so I guess the $3500 is reasonable.

I feel your pain, I am going through some of the same here on this coast. I had a house with (7) 150 year old oaks and sold it last year for that reason. It cost 2000.00 to remove one tree. That was enough to convince me that I did not have enough money to keep that property. In Pinellas county, homes are so close that nearly all tree removals are a big deal.
