I was talking to a guy and he says not to use synthetic motor "car" oil, it has some bad additives that may be harmful to clutch system. I have been using Castrol Edge formerly Syntech SAE 0w-40. I know my machine is not a cheap one,but it is about half the price as Yamalube and I like Castrol products and they are readily avaliable when I need them. Anybody have any input.

I believe your guy was referring to automotive oils that are marked as Energy Conserving oils. They do have additives that are unsuitable for motorcycles and ATVs with wet clutches.

Oils have a mark called the API Service Symbol or donut like this one. If it says "Energy Conserving" at the bottom, then do not use it in your S10.

I have always used Castrol Power 1 semi-synthetic SAE 15W-50 (in Malta we have mild to hot climate).

This will clear things up a little.

Also, why would you use car oil in your motorcycle when you can get motorcycle specific oil? Do what you like, but that has always baffled me, people spend a ton of money on a bike, then follow manufacturers recommendations on oil change intervals (which is BS BTW) and use cheaper oils...........

Because we have a choice and more is not always better in my book!

I change my oil ever 3 to 3.5k been using Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5w-40 on three bikes now at $20.00 a gallon I am happy to say I have no issue using it.

I have used this oil in two different Tenere's and all of my other bikes and it works great! Never had any oil related failures and the price is definitely right on this oil.

Has anyone had an oil related failure in the past decade? A rare occurance if it has happened at all off the race track. It is pretty hard to make a really bad decision concerning oil these days. I suspect you could substitute any brand name for "Shell Rotella" in your post and it would be just as true...... except the $20 part. ;D

X2 on shell rotella. 20 bucks and I change 4000 miles. Not one issue and I'm a fast rider. Knock on wood!
Then because of your oil just slow down.

Now I use Yamalube so I can hammer down!

Plus, the Blue Bottle Rotella T (don't use the white or silver) won't mess with your clutch. I guess that is what I should have said about that issue. You are correct, oil related failures are almost a thing of the past now days with quality of synthetics and even regular oil. This just reminds me that I need to change my oil. ::025::

The Full Synthetic rotella T is technically not diesel oil. some of the "Diesel" type oils have a lot of additives where this does not. That is why I advised not to use the white or silver bottle.

dont need to slow down with t6 "blue bottle" it's full synthetic and half price of yami lube. Last time I checked yami doesn't make oil. It reminds me of a story a friend told me. He would go to the Amish market. One occasion he caught one of them pouring a local name brand oj into the fresh squeezed hopper. I'm sure people prefer the specialty oj to the one that's cheaper in bulk.

My only concern would be my Yamaha Yes plan.
Per federal law on warranties, as long as you can prove changing the oil with the proper type, say receipt for the oil and filter listing type, you are good. If it meets the specifications in the manual they cannot use that.

I highly recommend Rotella t6 synthetic 5w-40. It is cheap and easily available at any Wal-Mart nationwide, has the Jaso-Ma cert we need and gives good clutch/transmission feel. The 5w-rating means that this oil will flow well in the cooler months for those of us that live where it gets cold. If you live in a warm climate and want to save some money, Rotella Triple T 15w-40 works great and is a little cheaper than T6 synthetic. On bikes that are out of warranty, I have used Delo 400 Le 5w-40 for years and it works great also but does not have the Jaso-Ma certification.

I have used Rotella T6 in my Goldwing and on more customers bikes than I can count. No problems ever reported. It meets the Yamaha specs of JASO standard MA

I definitely would not use anything not rated MA for motorcycle use while the bike is under warranty. Personally I like the Castrol 4T 10w-50 or 10w-40 or Mobil 1 4T 10w-40. Yeah the stuff is $10/qt. but cheap next to a denied warranty claim.

I thought the same and looked at the Rotella T-6, it states Jaso-MA on the label.
