I was wondering what are folks preference when servicing the oil. Do you fill to the max mark in the window or go half way? I have been splitting the difference and filling half way. The books says anywhere within the marks. Thanks

I like it in the middle ..............

A little more... I changed mine today. I put oil in until I see it in the window. Then I start the motor for about 5-10 sec. Then I wait a few minutes and add oil till I see it come back up in the window... Start the motor again and run it 10-15 sec. I normally wait 5-10-15 minutes and go back and re-check the oil. By this time I add oil till its half way in the glass........

Here is the strange part. I go ride the bike 5-10 miles and come back and re check it... It seams to have to much oil in the case. Even after waiting its still too much oil.. I have to take out about half a cup of oil for the oil to be half way in the glass.. This has been about every time..

Hey Jax I sort of do the same thing but I fill my new filter, then add 3 quarts to the engine, then after running it for a bit and letting it sit until cooled I begin to add until it comes up in the window half way. By doing this method it has remained at that level perfectly. Your run times of 5-10 secs might not be long enough and it's making you over service it. Try one run of 3-5 minutes then let it cool off good and check and fill until it's in the window. Just my 2 cents.

Yamaha says that anything within the marks is fine with no recommendation to be high or low on the sight glass. After an oil change, if you use the spec'ed amount, it should be near the top mark and you don't need to add makeup oil until it gets near the bottom. Seems like the easiest way to handle it.

I've changed oil twice and my experience is that the spec'ed 3.6 qts (with filter change) is perfect; after a ride with the oil warm and the bike on the centerstand, the level will be about at the top mark. So you put the right amount in, then simply begin monitoring the level as you always do. Given this, I don't see the point of partial filling, adjusting, draining, etc. to try and get it just right. It will be just right if you follow the spec.

I just warm and drain the oil and remove filter then replace filter and put in 3.6 qts of oil and I'm done.

When I warm the bike on the centerstand, it's usually right in the middle.

I'll check it every 1k or so but it didn't move after the last oil change so I don't expect it to much much if at all on this one.

if your bike is on the centerstand, and you check the oil before a ride when you check the tire's pressure (as you should) and the cold oil level is at or above the low mark. Just go ride. It's not a bmw. No need to be anal. ::021::

I measure out the appropriate amount and stuff it in...I don't do the sight glass thang anylonger.

What he said !!!!! ::026:: There is obviously something a little squirrelly with this dry sump system I reckon, so put in what the engineers have recommended and check for leaks frequently. If you're not leaking or burning oil, it should all still be in there. Dr. LowTech.

just remember while your riding tho that if the oil level does fall slightly below or go slightly above the recommended levels the motor will implode catastrophically and your warranty will be void

now go ride and don't panic ::008::

DRY SUMP! It really does not matter how close to the mark you get it just that there is oil in there. Give or take a little.
Just get it close and ride.

Just to be clear, because I made marks on my measuring pitcher for this bike tonight, and it's stated differently than the shop manual numbers in this thread and others.

3.59 QUARTS

or

3.4 LITERS

With a filter change. I'm going with the shop manual numbers and using the sight glass just as a visual reference.

I just did another oil & filter change and added 3.6 US quarts.

My proceedure has been to start the cold engine, run until the coolant temp. gauge reads 140F, then I shut her down and wait 5 minutes.
The oil level has always been right in the middle of the sight glass with the bike on level ground and on the center stand.

With the engine cold I can't see any oil in the sight glass. When the engine is hot (after riding) the sight glass appears full.
I'm not sure if it would work but I wish someone would create a dip stick in place of the stock filler plug.
