What am I looking at when viewing the sight glass? The oil level in the engine/crank case or the tank?
When engine is totally cold my sight glass is full, so I assume that's the tank level that I'm looking at?

I followed the procedure for checking oil level in the manual* and had to remove 500ml to get it to the max line in the sight glass (Only just got the bike on Saturday).

*well dunno if oil temp was 60 degC but I checked after a 2 hr ride after shutting it down for 5 mins.

You're looking at the tank quantity.
I'd be careful about removing 500ml/.5 quarts unless I checked the oil exactly as prescribed in the manual.

Thanks bud.
As I said though it's at max when checking according to the manual... It says wait a few mins so I waited 5..
When it's cold it's above max ie on the centre stand the level is above the glass window. Going by that I'd say there's plenty of oil in there.

Believe it or not refilling after and oil drain is quite easy to get to the right level. Simply drain when warm on the center stand including the filter. Top up with exactly 3.4 liters and go. Don't worry about the sight glass. Check after a long ride and cool down. Will be right on the money. Checking the sight glass any sooner than that only confuses you and you end up adding and deleting oil trying to get the right level. Ask me how I know?

Perfect way to do it you can't go wrong. The only time I try and read the sight glass is on a long trip then I start the bike up and let it warm up to 210 deg f at which time the fan comes on. Let the fan cycle at least twice, shut the engine off wait a few minutes and you should have the correct oil level doing all this on the bikes center stand.

No sure I was thinking mine kicked in around 212 but you might be correct. Either way it really heats up before it kicks on. Next time I run mine I will check.
