Oil in air filter box (more than in the little rubber reservoir on the bottom)

Hi

I'm just in the middle of doing a air filter and plug change . The bike is an 2010 model with 57,000 km on the clock - it's had a full service history.

I'm finding quite a lot of oil in the airbox (the filter seems to have been soaked in oil ?) such that some appears to have got into the throttle bodies . Is this normal and if not (which I suspect ) what are the possible causes ?

The bike runs well and I do a fair mileage. All breather pipes appear to be properly in place and seated. There is oil residue on the top of the cylinder head but the head gasket is fine

All helpful suggestions welcomed

Mine had more oil that just the volume of the little bulb too, maybe about 10cc total. Air cleaner was not soaked though. Are you overfilling the oil?

If you do a fair bit of high rpm riding, this is common. When was the last time you checked the airbox? (miles ago)

Some have installed a length of hose instead of the cap, with a bolt or other plug so that it's easier to drain the excess oil w/o pulling the airbox.

Thanks for the replies - very helpful - I did find other links on the site too.

My last long run was a 970 km high speed ride (130 kph +) from Germany to back home here in Western France in a day (bike performed admirably of course) so that would explain it .

I saw the tube mod which I might do I think as my riding tends to be long motorway blasts to get somewhere then gentler riding when I get there ! This year Italy for a Moto Guzzi event at the factory.

I've always been impressed with the build quality of the SuperTen - obvious when servicing. These days though it tends to be 60 mins servicing/30 mins YouTube/30 min this forum !!

Thanks again - much reassured

I like this tube idea, the little rubber bulb and clip do not seem very securely attached. If this bit were to fall off dirty air could directly enter the intakes.

Perhaps, but the end cap is quite securely attached; I have difficulty pulling it off even after the clip is removed. It is the piece that came on the bike that was attached directly to the airbox, and is attached to the extension using the OEM clip.

Sorry, I was not clear. I was referring to the OEM bulb that's attached directly to the air box with the OEM clip as not being very secure. Mine comes right off in my hand with very minimal effort without even messing with the clip. That it is oily doesn't help. Wish Yamaha had put some semblance of a barb on the connector the bulb fits over. I find myself checking it often to make sure it's still there.

Can Anyone explain to me why the liquid in my airbox (during filter change) was orange and in the airbox bulb it was like a white paste like cream sauce? Shouldn't it be oil and the color of oil?

Dunno on the orange but the creamy stuff is Sludge or emulsified oil; a product of water + oil.

Which is pretty normal on that side of the airbox. The orange may simply be a product of the oil mixed with residue from the filter or other incoming air contaminates. Anything you ride though, (pollen, dust, etc), gets sucked into the airbox. Most gets caught in the filter, but minute particles pass thru.

Thanks, I had a small pool of this orange liquid in the air box in the lower left corner (above the overflow bulb). It was considerably more than the overflow bulb could handle. It was definitely orange but I will write this off as normal. Its been 20,000 miles since an air filter replacement. She's run great since new, no issues.
