When pushed at 80-85mph over long distances my '12 could burn a quart of oil in 3-5k miles.
What are gen 2 owners experiencing?

What oil do you use ?

My previous S10 (2010) had 46 000 km on when I trade it for a 2014 S10 and it didnt need top up between service intervals, I was using Motul 5100 from day one.

I rode my 2012 hard one time traveling from Oklahoma city to Denver, Just under 8 hours. Didn't use a drop of oil. couldn't tell you how fast, but the grass was not growing under the wheels and faster than the speeds you were talking about.

Thats why I'm asking what oil he is using, we have other oil brands here in SA than you but I had found on one of my previous cars that when I was using Castrol the engine use some oil then I changed to Shell and no oil was need between services.

I can't speak for 2nd gen.
But my 2012 will take 600ml-1L at roughly 4000km.
61km, using AMSOIL 10W40

I don't do extended high speed riding, but I have a heavy right hand.

I've been told that it maybe due to the lack of back pressure on the exhaust pipe (oem headers, to be swapped to arrows soon :) and staintune slip on run without baffle), which in turn either
a: burns oil
b: sucks it into the airbox.

The bike never really had any real amount of oil in the airbox that I could see..

Blu actually no longer has a Tenere, he moved to a liquid cooled GS.
So I'm curious why the question.

(Remember - no personal slams just because he owns a blue roundel now)

Yea, Big Blu........why ya askin? :)

You even started the thread, so it's not an inconsequential thread highjack. (a category I'm the worst offender, admittedly)
Oil consumption of any substantial amount has not been a common or expected issue chronicled here for either generation, over the years.
But I suspect you already know that. It's your forum too, after all.

CW, I am behaving myself, I promise. O:)

Yes, pre LC boxer motors used oil by design, I've owned several.

Snake, several other gen 1 owners have indeed reported oil consumption, see Greg's post. Sports guy, Brick, True Grip, Coastie, Tonerrequeb, Juan, Roy, Ramseybella, Swampy(as reported by AVC8130...... Are amount gen 1 owners reporting oil consumption.

You guys make me laugh....... Whatta ya worried about? ::025::

I don't understand why the motorcycle I currently ride is of any concern. I ask because a riding buddy is selling his KLR and KTM 640 Adv. and considering buying an ST, a used gen 1 or gen 2 left over. When we ride we often swap bikes for shits and giggles. He's put a few hundred miles on my ST, and we discussed my views on the ST at length and gen 1 vs gen 2. ES and CC are not important to him. when we discussed the gen 2 changes to the rings and top end we wondered if that reduced the oil consumption that I and others had reported when going fast and long.

I used Mobil 1 in my ST after the initial breakin service.

I appreciate hearing your experiences with the gen 2.

My goal was to ask the painfully obvious question in an unthreatening context before somebody else went the wrong way, since you have been so vocal about buying the LC and don't have a Gen2 Tenere. You know I personally ride whatever I can, including the occasional BMW, and value having your experience here.

Your answer about your friend really clears it up, so thank you for adding the context.

My Gen1 bike has not been an oil burner per se and normally makes it between 5,000 mile changes without adding. But if at interstate speeds for a thousand miles plus, a few times I've had to add roughly 1/4 qt bring the oil level back to the center of the window. The first time was when the low level light lit in a motel parking lot the middle of nowhere one morning and surprised me. Obviously, the oil level is lower when the engine is cold. Since then I know to check on long highway trips, and again, only when at sustained rpm. I guess the bike got to close to the KLR DNA.
;)
So does anybody have Gen2 oil use numbers for Blu and his friend?

My gen.2 do not consume any oil, measurable. So was the case with my gen.1 too.

Iv had 5 new bikes since 2005 and strangley none of them has consumed oil, they are all broken in by the book
and I just think it seems odd with the reports of adding oil regularly on modern bikes.

Ill just stay with that I might been extremely lycky with the samples I bought.

My riding is normal, using the entire rpm range and sitting in the 4000-5000 rpm range when doing daily commuting.

GL With his decision! :)

Pre water cooled R1200 GS's used plenty oil , don't know about the later W.C version ...could this be a link to the question ::008::
When I first got my BMW R1150gs it used a lot of oil (thought I'd bought a two stroke :) ) It originally had 10/40 semi synthetic but I changed to 20/50 semi synth at about 5000mls and the oil consumption improved greatly.

There are things I don't like about this bike, but oil use isn't one of them. Mine doesn't burn any notable amount between oil changes.

My 2015 uses zero oil. First 100 km I took it easy, and did 3 cold to operating temperature cycles. Up to 500 km I got rougher with it, redlining from time to time. Changed oil and filter and ran that oil to 5000km. Didn't use a drop. I'm at 8500 km and it just keeps getting better. Seems smoother and more power. What a sweet bike.

I never had to add oil in the 34,000 miles I put on my Gen 1 or the 14,000 I have put on my Gen 2. I change oil at 4,000 mile intervals and use Yamalube dyno 10-40. On interstate runs, I normally do 80 mph actual for extended periods.

My 2012 did not use oil for 50,000 miles then it started to use a lot of oil. At 52.200 miles I changed oil and filter and the next morning the CCT failed. During the inspection they discovered severe carbon build up in the cylinder. Enough build to prevent the valves from closing. The carbon had little to do with the CCT failure but did with using oil. During the discussion of the failure both Yamaha and a few members from this forum mentioned the use of Yamalube Ring Free Plus a fuel additive. One member posted photos and how well it cleaned (like new) the intake valves. With the thought of "if it cleaned the intake valves it cleaned the complete cylinder".

Do yourself a favor and try using Yamalube Ring Free Plus to see if it will make a difference.

Big Blu,

Your second post could easily have been your opening post. But that wouldn't have been as much fun.

Well played.

I,m on my second S10 and now have the new model . I did several tours on my 2011 S10 and one of them was spain in 38 degrees heat riding through the middle of a baking hot city salamanca . the cooling fan was on almost all of the time but it never used any oil, nor has my 2014 ( gen 2 ) used any . I wonder if some people are reading there oil level wrong as the S10 is bugger to check .
