Oil change gone wrong...

Long story short....Even after i picked up a filter wrench at walmart at 10 at night that filter was a beast. I resorted to savage methods but I ended up getting all good to go but damn.... ::002::

I know haters gonna hate but this was my first motorcycle oil change. No more dealership charging me out the ass for "Servicing" ::024::

Cycle Gear carries K&N.

We are lucky there's no headers in front of the oil filter, you'd still be kicking yourself if it was say...R1 for instance...

I don't use the oil filter wrench....POS's IMO. I use an adapter for the filter that hugs the outside top of the filter and it is used with a socket wrench. Very easy and the part is only about 5 bucks.

I've used the wrench before and ended up doing what you did but on a car...oh ya, and vise grips too. :)

It's not the best place in the world to have an oil filter is it ? Right at the front of the motor so it catches all the poop thrown up by the front wheel. It amazes me that someone at Yamaha signed off that design and thought it was a good engineering solution...

By the way, I hope you put the oil filter on hand tight and didn't tighten it with the wrench, or you will be using the screwdriver puncture method again next time. Most novices over tighten everything on the bike, and then wonder how bolts get stripped and things are impossible to remove.

now add to your fun and put an Alt Rider skid plate on and get the filter in and out without removing said plate....

Hand tight is the key to getting off the next time. I had to do the screw driver punch method the last time I changed the oil on my Dodge truck....there was just no room to get any kind of wrench on that one. There really in noting wrong with the punch method except for the mess. The thing to remember is punch as far to the outside of the filter as possible so you don't damage the threads on the engine or worse.

And, always put some oil on the rubber gasket on the new filter before installing.

Yes i lubed up the o-ring. Its the same thing with aircraft generators and their scavenge oil filters. But i definitely only hand threaded it on and gave it a good wipe down and tugged on it again. I took my skid plate off since i painted it black i uninstalled it and touched it up so it looks smooth and matte-black again. Over all this route is alot cheaper and seems enjoyable working on my own bike, not just installed new parts but the maintenance side of it. I am new to the whole types of oil but all i know is full-syn is better but as far as what you guys run what would you recommend need time oh and i stay down here in Florida most of the time temperature wise. ::017::
