When I put a few hundred miles on my new 17, I went to change the oil and the filter would not come off. . . .
Same here. Drove a screwdriver through it and tried to turn it. Tore the metal. Got a big Chanellock, squeezed, crushed, and turned. It came off without any damage. Never more than hand tight since.

The threads on the union on my 2013 were a little rough even when new. Always used Yamaha filters. Replaced it and bought a spare just in case, No big deal, $10 part. Cheaper than buying a set of thread files, unless of course you already have them.

New 2014 union Bolt ordered along with some OEM filters to get the order high enough for free shipping. It is backordered but should be here before I need it. Back together with my last FRAM filter. I do love the Valvoline full synthetic M/C oil. Shifting is so smooth.

Got the -20008- union bolt after a short backorder. Will swap it out next oil change. Going with OEM filters hand tight from now on.
