right, so happy as a pig in shit this afternoon, since my set of mitas dakar came in.
Off to the garage to wrench the new rear tire on.
On it goes, no probs, nice chunky tire, stiff side wall, looks great. Tread depth (center of tire was about 135mm, above the rib was 90mm)

slap the rear end together, button it up, the shaft is making a clunking sound.... ::010::
take it apart again, turns out the cush rubbers were installed wrong (someone please correct me if im wrong) I had the rubbers straddle the hub, so I put the rubbers upside down so each triangular rubber was next to the hub, and the gear thingiemaggiger hub goes between them, slap it all back together, no noise. Perfect.

Next problem. The tire is bouncing up and down like a bastard, not round at all, and causing a huge wobble on the entire bike (on centerstand, running in 1st or 2nd gear with thorttle, so no drive line lash/snatch)
Some background history, last year in oct. I lost two spokes in one go. Reinstalled some new spokes, and decided to go round the wheel to retighten it...dumb move i'm guessing.
Back then I installed a brand new k60 on the bike but did not notice the vibes as bad. btw I use dynabeads to balance the wheel, no wheel weights.
this winter I pulled the rear swing arm off for lubing, and as I was reassembling the whole thing I noticed the out of roundess on the k60.
So I took the tire and rim to a local shop, to see if the rim was out of round. I was told that the K60 was out of round and to return it for warranty.
Beliving that, I had the MItas coming anyways so I slapped the rear on, and same thing.

Sweet jesus i'm allmost finished here...

my question is:

is my local shop guy not telling me the whole story ( is the rim out of round)
is it possible that I have two tires that are out of round (doubtful)
or is it something I don't know about

your thought are much appreciated, pics of the new tire

I think the guy at the shop, did not check the rim. Maybe he did and you have two different tires out of round, not likely..
When you tightened the spooks, it must be done in a certain way. When you went around and tightened each one without using a dial indicator, it put the rim out of true.

You can fix it, with a little patience and some time.. ::025::

just spin the tire while it is on the stand using a piece of wire bent to mark the edge of the rim as a guide so to show any possible issues. It will show the vertical and horizontal movement.

If you put the bike on the centerstand and give it a spin my hand, its usually pretty easy to tell if the rim, tire, or both are out of round.

thanks guys,

yes, i made a crude dial indicator, and the rim does seem to be out a bit.
I highly doubt it would two tires that are no good.
MIght have to give Woody a call tomorrow, good excuse to splurge on the stainless steel spokes

thank you Tenerator.

i'll put the tire on DAve6 tire machine, re-balance it with out the dynabeads and see what happens.
He just put the exact same brand tire on his bike last night..

Sorry about the challenges of wobble, but I gotta say I like the looks of that tire.

went to see Dave6, to put the tire/rim on his balaning stand. rim is a-0k
the tire does have a very small variation from knob to knob, otherwise good.
So the fix is.....ride it.
So i'll put some k's on it tomorrow, and saturday, report back.
Dave just installed his.

btw...they are great value, under $300 for a set to your door

I think I get an extra $75 attached for shipping to the states. I must admit I am thinking bout these. Maybe we can get some performance reports put together alongside the K60s.

I've seen more than a few automotive tires look pretty bad after a new install. They then get an extra dose of slimyness and perhaps a fair bit more pressure than the sidewall declares as max. The tires that 'snap' into place are the good ones, these trouble ones just kind of slow motion slip into/onto the bead of the rim. Without seeing the results of the spun rim/tire, my educated guess would be that these tires, at least one of them, did not properly seat to the rim. I ran Avon Gripsters on my old XL that required 70 psi to get the tire seated. Thats over several sets.

The tire was seated fine as we rotated the tire on the balancer with the indicator needle pointed at the fine line just above the rim on the tire, it was dead even. We did the same thing on the corner of the first row of knobs on the side wall and they were also dead even. When rotating the tire with the needle at the very outside circumference you could see a variation of about .060" when rotated.
