Gobear is SO right. Everybody likes what they like. HD owners will defend their bikes er, idiosyncrasies, to the death. If they are satisfied with their bikes, that's all that counts. My Japanese bikes have never let me down. the one Beemer I had, '04 1150 RT-P, didn't have any tranny problems, but I did go through two broken input shafts; which in turn destroyed the clutches. I've never held anybody's choice against them....it ain't my money. And yes , I am biased towards Yamaha. ::022::

Yeah, and I didn't mean to reproach anyone. Sorry if it came out that way. BMW does have poorer reliability than Japanese bikes, end of story.

Got a nice ride in today, 250 miles. Blew far past first service mileage. Gear shift, tranny, even the cages :) very well behaved today. Do love the bike, the responsiveness, feel and way it handles. Maybe I should test ride a Ducati Multistrada next >:D. I would have considered that more seriously if it had shaft drive. Hate chains!

The Yamaha is a bike you buy with your brain, I recently switched my brain off for a while to give my heart a go at decision making and bought a KTM, I know it is not likely to fare as well over time as the S10, and the longer I keep it the bigger this differential could become, but it is likely to do better than the only BMW I ever owned (a 2008 GS)

I have to admit BMW build very nice bikes, the ergonomics work well, the performance and handling is always good, but they neither appeal to my head or my heart now, they seem to be launched with far too little testing and development time and the owners always suffer, I know BMW generally look after owners of failed motorcycles quite well, but that is not enough to tempt me back to the brand.

It seems like the latest models Achilles heel is the gearbox, and I know one owner who had the entire gearbox vacate the crankcases on a 2014 model.

Yeah, it's kind of shocking really. Such a nice product otherwise. Getting back to a point someone else made, seems that BMW have been starting to lose market share. Perhaps to Ducati in the adventure segment? Sure I read somewhere that many of the YM2017 updates/options are an attempt to respond to this. If so continuation of this trend will likely do the BMW brand some good.

When I bought my S10 in 2010 I wanted an upgrade from my Suzuki DL650. I certainly got that and more. If I had been able to take the bike with me to US in 2013 as I wanted to do I would have not gone 3-years without a bike and would have probably still been using it. Probably wouldn't have been a BMW owner now. Did consider the 2010 R1200GS at the time and test drove a couple. Price vs feature trade-off pushed me towards the Yamaha. Was a very nice ride indeed at-least after the ECU re-flash. Anyway, that's the way the cookie crumbles, variety is indeed the spice of life.
