This is a heads up for anyone using the OEM top case.

I want to preface this by stating that I like the looks of this case over most of the others out there and also like the fact that it was designed specifically for the S10 and integrates with the stock mounting rack.

First off, I received mine a couple of weeks ago and finally got some time last night to install the lock cylinder. What should have been a 15 minute job turned into a 2 hour ordeal because of the POS assembly instructions. In short, if you install the lock cylinder backing plate as shown in the drawing, you will NOT be able to turn the lock (and you risk bending the ignition key as well). I finally got frustrated and disassembled the whole f'ing thing to see how the latch worked.

Some random observations:

With the exception of the lock cylinder and a springs, the latch mechanism is 100% plastic. A couple of the critical latching components seem stout enough for general use but time will tell if they hold up over the long haul.

The mechanism did not have any assembly lube at some critical rubbing points. I put a light coat of general purpose grease on these areas. The mechanism is fairly well sealed so I wasn't concerned about the grease attracting dirt and dust.

If you have to take the thing apart, do so at your own risk and watch out for flying springs. Take your time and note where the springs go.

Be patient putting everything back together-if you try to rush it, it will simply be an exercise in frustration. Re-install the small screw that holds the latch hook back and only remove it when everything is back in place.

The key to getting everything to work right is to properly position the lock cylinder backing plate. It must be installed so that the splines mate correctly with the grooves in the plastic cam. This is NOT at the 0 degree (vertical) position as shown in the instructions. If you try to position it that way it will NEVER work and you risk damaging the plastic cam if you force it. Install the backing plate and rotate it clockwise approx. 30 degrees until you feel it snap into place. You can then push in the latching handle at the bottom of the case and rotate the backing plate counterclockwise to vertical until the backing plate tab mates with the plastic detent.

Ok, that all sounds great.....so what's the warning? If you leave a key in the lock and the box is subjected to enough shock/vibration, it WILL come unlatched from the bike and go bouncing down the road behind you!! This is because the mechanism is spring loaded and with a key in the lock, the only thing keeping the lock cylinder from rotating and unlatching is a weak plastic detent.

Now that I understand how the latch works, here are my recommendations:

Don't use the ignition key for the top case. Go to a locksmith and get a duplicate shorter key made and use that key exclusively. At the very least, have a spare ignition key with you or hidden on the bike somewhere. If the latch binds or breaks, the key WILL get stuck and you will bend/break it trying to remove it. Without an extra ignition key, you'll be stuck.

Check the operation of the latching mechanism often especially when riding off road. Make sure the bottom release lever is FULLY locked and in place. Grab the side handles and pull up on the case just to be sure.

IMHO, the latching mechanism is adequate as long as it's functioning properly. Again, NEVER leave a key in the lock and ride off!! Keep in mind the latch mechanism IS plastic and not really repairable if something breaks. If in doubt, scrap the whole thing and use it as a footrest, beer cooler or family heirloom. As I said, I really WANT to like this box....time will tell how well it holds up!

Hope this helps-

Steve

I now have close to 4700 miles on the bike, which I can safely say 4500 have had all three bags mounted. I mounted the bags myself and lubed the cylinders on install. I have left the key in all cylinders at different time and even ran gravel roads and never had the lock mechanism move or the key fall out.

Yes, if the key went to the unlatch position it would get loose, but it is spring loaded and you have to over ride the springs to remove the box. I would have to say if your box is able to fall off, your mechanism is broken.

After 4500 miles I'm just noticing that the top box has a little movement in it "in the latched position" other than that I'm happy with all the bags.

Yes, on purpose and by accident. ::013::

Thanks-good to know.

It's more common than you might think and I have been guilty of doing it in the past. It's convenient if you want to access a bag with the bike running (or to get a beer out of a side bag while riding). ::003::

I had a set of BMW cases once that came with several keys keyed for the ignition almost encouraging the practice of leaving the keys in the locks.

I have always had a key in my give bags while riding and plan to do so with the spare keys I bought. I will keep this all in mind.

I think I am f#&!ing screwed. I am have been struggling with the OEM top case key cylinder install for hours and have my case locked in closed position and cannot get it opened without feeling like I am going to either break my spare ignition key or some cheap plastic piece in the case locking mechanism. Its is going to take an engineer or something to figure this mess. I am going to take back to the dealer I bought it from and have them figure it out.
I am so damn pissed off right now I could scream. IT SHOULD NOT BE THIS DAMN HARD TO INSTALL!!!! WTF!!!
It pisses me off that this top case deal is bringing me down from my one week high of owning the S10.
There I said it and feel slightly better now. I'll go for a spin on the S10 sans top case and maybe that will help even more.

its really not that hard if you do it correctly, i have now built and installed god knows how many sets now and not had a single problem with the build or customers bitching about the keys being weak or breaking them, i guess its all about taking time to explain how it all works when people come to pick their new bike up ::008::

Go to a locksmith and get a duplicate shorter key made and use that key exclusively.

::026::

Did the same.

Otherwise the cases as well as their mounting is bomb proof. ::022::

Once you figure out how it actually works it is incredibly simple. The mechanism come stiff from the factory. Some lube and figuring out the action and it is simple. I definitely had to take a time out then when I figured it how I knew it was simple minded and will need to be changed out with a more robust top case later. The only thing made worse than the lock mechanism is the key...those are truly made out of cheese!

Have you tried pressing down on the lid to relieve pressure on the latching mechanism when rotating the key?

: ::018::One bit of advice to add to this post. I too was having all kinds of issues getting the key cylinder in the case. Thanks to this post I did rotate the back of the key lock and put it together. Here is where I had an aha moment! The key only turns the latch hook to the open position WHEN THE CASE IS ATTACHED TO THE CASE HOLDER ON THE BACK OF THE BIKE! Trying to get the key to move the latch when the case was on my workbench was only putting stress on the key and on me! The instructions are pretty useless beyond pictures. Now when the side cases arrive I expect an easier time.

Old thread/topic, but.....

I wanted to commend the board and posters for something that was extremely useful to a new S10 owner. I decided to go with the factory luggage and thanks to the OP's posting I was able to get the top box lock installed and working. Otherwise, I would have been SOL. The side cases were easy, but the top box was NOT. :-[

I will only add that when installing the lock, you have give it a firm twist and not baby it. That was my mistake. Being plastic, I was afraid of breaking it, but it isn't that flimsy. ::022::

I have the OEM top case and wanted the matching side cases, but when I bought my Super Ten, they were on back order, with no estimated delivery date, so I went with the Trax cases instead. They have worked out well.
