OEM luggage Rack Fail

Hey Everyone,

I thought I'd share a warning after a fun experience this morning. I'll try my best to explain what happened.

When I bought my Tenere 3 months ago, I asked the dealership if the Shad trunk box I had purchased for my previous bike would fit on it. They told me they more than likely could attach the mounting plate to the luggage rack, and they did. They never gave me any sort of warning so I never really inspected their install.

Pan back to this morning on my 25 mile commute to work. I almost made it in, there are 2 speed bumps about a half mile from my job and I always take them pretty slow. When I hit the first one, I heard a loud noise from my box. I assumed it was my laptop that I never bring bouncing around, so when I hit the second one, I went a lot slower. My whole topcase came off and went tumbling on the ground while going over this second one. When I picked it up, I looked for what happened, and realized the dealership had drilled holes in the thin plastic top piece of the luggage rack in 4 locations.

If you look at how the OEM luggage rack is set up, there is a more robust solid plastic rack mounted to the bike frame, then this thinner piece is mounted to the robust piece by 3 screws near the top. My mount was attached to this piece and when I hit bumps, the bottom part of the this thin plastic piece would bounce because it wasn't secured to the more robust piece, stressing the plastic close to where it is mounted to the bottom piece (Sorry, I know this sounds confusing). This is exactly where it cracked and failed on my bike. I'm extremely lucky this didn't happen while splitting lanes across the bay bridge, or any other spot of my commute at highway speeds.

I never overloaded this box, usually used it to carry an extra helmet, or my padded pants and a sweater. I would have still bought the bike if they said there was no way to safely mount my old box on this bike without buying the correct rack or adaptor, so it's pretty frustrating that they jerry-rigged this together, and after 3 months it failed, scratched and scuffed up my box that was in perfect condition, and possibly broke my laptop.

You might want to reconsider how you mount your top box if you try and cut corners to save a couple hundred bucks.

Any mechanic worth his salt would realize that a thin piece of plastic would not hold anything substantial,i would be going back to the dealership and ask what they were playing at fixing a top case mounting to it in such a away.

Is there a warning sticker on the plastic rack that specifies maximum weight?

I bought my 2014 used a few weeks ago and it has a 47 liter Givi Blade attched to the stock rack. I quickly noticed how much play there was in the rear box and realized that the top rack is only attached by three bolts at the front alowing a lot of play in the back. I have removed the top box untill i can make a new bracket or purchase something that will handle the weight. It does state in the owners manual that the max load for the rear rack is 11 lbs. there are plenty of good aftermarket parts to fix this issue.

Yup, there is a sticker on the rack which states the max weight. I removed the stronger sub rack to make the luggage rack top level with the base plate under the passenger seat. I run with the front seat only. I mounted a small Pelican box to hold some tools and tire repair kit to the rack. Just noticed that the rack is now cracked. Not a big deal, however, I am no longer running with the Pelican case. Anyone want to sell the top luggage rack piece?

I did notice how it would bounce, I thought this was just due to buying a cheaper Shad box instead of going with Givi or something nicer. I figured since I had the dealership install it that it would done correctly and safely. I've put close to 5500 miles on the bike in the 3 months, so it took a little bit of time.

I'm headed to the dealer after work to show them the cracked piece and find out how they are going to make this right. I'm expecting a new shad box or, better yet, just money from them to cover the cost of the shad. I also think my laptop is no longer working, its a year year old macbook pro, but it was a working 6 year old macbook pro before this happened, so this will be interesting.

I've liked dealing with this dealership, and this is the 2nd new bike I've bought from them in less than 2 years, so I am expecting some solid customer service in return.

And yes, the sticker clearly says 11 lbs. I was aware of this which is the reason I only used this box for a helmet, or an extra set of clothes. Beer would always get strapped down to the back seat.

I think the biggest issue with the stock rear rack is that it is only bolted down on the front which allows the back to flex up and down which over time causes the rack to crack and fail. :'(
