I have both types on two different bikes.
I have Oxford "Adventure" grips on my FJ1200, and I put OEM Yamaha Grips on my S10 (Integrated with the ECU)
Since the Yamaha Grips have a much lower resistance than the Oxford ones, I was originally worried that they may not get as hot..................
I have found this NOT to be the case. When running at "Level-10" they get HOT!
To me they feel to get just as hot as the Oxfords on my FJ.
I had the OEM grips on my 2013 before I replaced them with the Oxford Adventure grips.
I remember the OEM grips being comparable to the Oxfords in heat output.
The wattage of the grips are about the same. The difference is that the OEM grips are wired in series whereas the Oxfords are in parallel.
I measured the resistance on all 4 of the grips when I installed the Oxford Adventure grips.
OEM grips - 1.9 and 1.8 ohms
Wired in series, total resistance = R1 + R2 = 3.7 ohms
Oxfords - 7.4 and 6.3 ohms
Wired in parallel, total resistance = (R1× R2) / (R1 + R2) =3.4 ohms
The OEM grips lasted 14,000 miles (2 yrs) before the throttle grip wire broke.
The Oxfords have 69,000 miles (4 yrs) on them and still going.
When I bought the bike the dealer installed the OEM grips so, of course they were not done right.
I found that the wiring was not routed properly in the housing so that probably affected the life of the wire. Even so, if I were to do it again I would go with the Oxfords but I like using the Warm & Safe Heat-Troller instead of the Oxford controller. (small but easy to use with winter gloves on.)
Four years ago, when I ordered the Oxfords through Lockitt they had an option of choosing the controller you wanted.
I just checked and they no longer offer that option but you can buy the parts individually.
