OK..... Need to get a set of bags and I've been all over the web looking and keep coming back to the OEM bags. What's the word on the street about the OEM bags. Planning one long trip next year (14,000+ miles) and after that it will be more of short one to two week runs. Most of the rides would be 80% blacktop and 20% gravel/dirt. I guess I've looking at cost vs. quality. Has anyone dumped their ride with these bags on and what was the damage like? I'm just flat out comfussed about the bags, etc. Looking for some good direction. Thanks in advance for your help.

My .02, I have been using the OEM bags since last August. I liked the narrow profile they provide and since I always travel solo (wife has her own bike) capacity was not an issue. The lock latches are fiddly. You have to push down on the lids before turning the key to the locked position to make sure the lids are secured. I cannot comment of crash-worthinenss as I have so far avoided taking the plunge so to speak. I guess that all I can say is I am content with my purchase and would buy them again.

YMMV,

I have the OEM bags and I think they're generally nice bags that have superior fit/integration with the bike. But they are relatively small capacity and are let down by flimsy latches that you have to be very careful with.

I won't go further in my evaluation because you really need to use the search engine for this query - there are several VERY LONG threads about luggage that discusse the pros and cons.

Just sold mine.
Here's a pic from a low speed drop in fist sized cobbles:

Damage was all cosmetic. I was satisfied with the sturdiness.

I did not like the locks, fiddly as mentioned, and I didn't like that there is no latched but unlocked option and that you need to keep the key in them unless you return the latch to the locked position. However, the reason I sold mine was that they were too small for me. I carry a lot of stuff. Medical and camera gear, in addition to the standard lot.

I have had the OEM side cases since August 2011.
- The locks can be a concern though I accept that. A proper installation and occasional lubing of the key will reduce your concerns.
- The amount they haul is less than most other side cases but their profile is also smaller.
- The lids should tilt further forward when open and tilted up and might as they age.
- Easy off and on.
- This has to be the best looking side case available for the Super Tenere.
- A couple of weeks ago I had a tip-over at a stop sign and the side cases did not touch the ground. I do have GIVI Guards and they kept the rest of the Super Tenere off the ground.
- These side cases seem to look like they have better ground clearance but I have nothing to prove that.
- The group I ride with eats a lot of Asian food and have named the side cases Bento Boxes.
- Are they the ultimate side case, no, but which are.

Mine have yet to see a decent get off. No damage from a simple drop, though. Locks are fickle but functional.

The fit is fantastic. Depending on the type of riding you are doing, they can be excellent. i really like the ability to remove them quickly. For multi-day trips that involve camping and hotels, the ability to remove them is very nice. i pack all of my camping equipment and emergency stuff in one case with my tent and crap strapped on top of it. i use rok straps on the box handles and criss cross them over the tent and stuff. At a hotel, I simply remove the box with all of the gear strapped to it and carry it inside. Literally takes seconds to remove the whole mess.

clothes are packed in the other side in the wonderful OEM sidecase inner bag.

Very handy to have removable boxes at a campground too. Sometimes the bike is a bit of a walk from the tent. i just take the boxes off and stash them under the vestibule of my tent.

I had a relatively slow speed stack in October; a car T-boned me and shoved me off the road. We were both going about 30 mph max. The boxes both survived perfectly well, it was their attachment points that broke off and cannot be replaced. The top case survived fine and is on the bike right now. I'm just now getting around to looking for new cases myself. The OEM cases were fine on some long camping trips, despite the valid gripes about fiddly locks and so forth. Check out Ardcases in the UK... dude makes custom alu cases at a price that is half that of jesse's or metal mule, and just as good. I still might get the OEMs, because I don't need a new rack, and that'll save me some bucks. Like I said, I was very satisfied with the cases, just not how they attach.

Thanks for that info. I'm happy to read that the mounting points on the bike held up. I have some metal cases on the way that mount to the OEM stays.
