OEM auxiliary wiring harness clarification needed

Someone else posted this pic of their OEM auxiliary wiring harnesses for the heated grips and Piaa lights.

However, on my South Africa spec re-import, I found these two wiring harnesses. The top plug and harness is marked (in Japanese) "grip heater." The bottom harness with the three plugs doesn't have any labeling but I assume they are for the driving lights. As I bought this bike used, I'm not sure if the PO changed the plugs from what is shown in the top pick, or whether the bike originally had this setup. Does anyone else's auxiliary wiring harnesses look like this? Thanks.

You have a big wad of wiring there. Untie it and pull it out. It's almost certainly not OEM, but likely plugs into OEM on the other end. I have not see that before, but suspect it may be the OEM harness for aux. lights. The previous owner may have had aux. lights on, and removed them, but left the harness. Or had the dealer install the harness and never gotten around to the lights.

The top pic shows the heated grip plug, (4 wire), which is Blue/black = 12v off the key switch, Black/green - 12v off the headlight relay, black - ground, light Green/white - ECU trigger. The Aux light plug, (3 wire), is Red/white - 12v unswitched power (20 amp fuse), Brown - 12v switched power from ECU, Black - Ground.

Normally the oem plugs shown in the upper pic are buried under some other wiring down below the tool kit.

Hope that helps.

edit - I have heard, but not been able to confirm, that some bikes came with the grip heaters installed, and the wiring harness attached, but the wires coiled up under the right panel and not connected. At least one bike I know of had non functioning grip heaters from the factory, and the harness was all there, just not plugged in. It may be that this is what you are seeing.

Eric, thanks for the info. The two harnesses were coiled up in place just over the tool kit. I will dig deeper and see what's on the other end of the two harnesses. On the bike that you know of with the non-functioning grip heaters, did it have the handlebar controller or any of the other handlebar-related bits that come with the OEM heated grips?

It did have the handlebar controller. The owner was baffled why it did not work, but never looked into it due to various reasons and not having time to take it to the dealer.

nope, those plugs don't look standard - I would trace the wires and try to identify the colours and then compare to service manual wiring diagrams - PM me if you don't have wiring diagrams.

Alternatively, you could measure the plugs with multimeter and different ignition switch settings - grips are only active when motor is running and spots active when ignition is on (even before motor runs)

I called the dealer where the PO bought the bike and it turns out that they were requested by the PO to wire-up several harnesses for future accessory use. So it looks like that's what these are. No sign of the original plugs.

And Dealers wonder why many of us don't want to use their "skilled labor" UN-F_ _ _'N Believable!!!!!! What a rats nest, no offense to you the current owner, just towards dealer!!!!

DId they randomly tap into wires which were close by?

I bet they don't even know the load capacity of any given circuit they have tapped into, like if you were to use one of them for heated clothing or grips? Geez!!!

I will stick to doing it my self with loom, zipties, junction box and soldering iron and maybe connectors from Eastern Beaver if necessary.

The YSP (Yamaha's official dealer network) shops in Japan are generally competent but I'm useless when it comes to electronics so I have no idea whether they did a decent job or not, appearance aside. Everything is wired directly into the bike's loom, with one harness marked for grip heaters. If it wasn't almost winter I'd drop by Eastern Beaver in Nagano and have Jim check it out.

My bike is 10 days old.. I h've buyed it in Spain.
And yes, it has the two OEM arnesses.
The one with 3 conectors is for fog lights, and the one with 4 is for OEM heated grips, but I plan to use it with another tpys (GPS, etc...)
