I rode down to Ocoee yesterday to ride some of the forest service roads. It was pretty fun, even with what could be considered street tires (although I think Yamaha feels they are 80/20).

The ride down the interstate was wet, but I stayed mostly dry. I arrived at the Hardees in Ocoee at 9am and it was packed, so I looked like this:

While waiting for my riding buddy, I grabbed a coffee and a Honey Bun at the gas station next door and proceeded to have breakfast while watching the clusterf*ck that was Hardee's. After he showed up, we headed out. It was pretty damn foggy up in the hills, but we still had fun.

It was a nice mixture of gravel, dirt, and rutted out mudholes. We went down to the "Apalacia" powerhouse and walked across the wooden bridge. We had considered riding across, but thought better of it. It then started to rain again, and made the riding a little more muddy, but not too bad.

We came back to Turtletown and headed to Copperhill to find something to eat. We stopped at Roger & Carol's, which was pretty awesome. I got a big burger and a chocolate shake for $7. If you're down that way, I would recommend stopping by.

After that, we pretty much split ways. I went to Tellico Plains to meet minimike and hung out for a little bit. Then I rode home, got soaked again, and finished the day by eating some awesome Mexican cuisine at Chuy's.

And here are some lovely pics.

Nice! I rode that area extensively a few years back on my Vstrom 1000 and most recently on my DR650. It gets pretty steep coming down by the power house #3 especially in a pouring rain.

The overlook road near the rangers station by the lake harbor is a good road back toward the north side of 64. Starts off paved up to the overlook then goes gravel/dirt. Not real technical but there are some rocky sections.

I'm in middle Tennessee... there a website or a map that shows how to access the area?

While at Tellico MC Outfitters in June, I picked up a map at really good National Geographic map next door. Mike (owns Tellico Outfitters) then highlighted a bunch of gravel routes & Forrest Service trails, which filled up 3 days.

Yeah, it was fun, but I would rather something a little more "hairy" if you know what I mean.
Then try the 434 powerline road off the Cherohalla, or if you really want hairy, do trail 82, and if you REALLY want hairy, do trail 81. ::024:: They are all in that area.

Ask my wife about trail 82.

Hint: freshly repaired ACL.

She did it on trail 82? I didn't know. That really sucks. Trail 82 is fast and easy on a small bike, but it's tough on a big adventure. I've done it a couple of times on the KTM Adventure. There is only one place where you've really got to be careful because of the rocks and the steep hill you'll fall down if you get it wrong. Trail 81 is much riskier than 82. I've been with guys on Adventure bikes who rode it, but I would never take the Tenere on trail 81.

I can't wait to get back to trail 82. Tiffany is also determined to tackle it again. It was really a minor crash; more of a fall, actually. ACLs are tricky little buggers.

Trail 81 is also on my list - looks like a real woods ride. There's a lot to love in that area!

Yes there is some good riding around there. Trail 81 would be easy on your DRZ, but I wouldn't take my Tenere down it. I'm pretty sure I could do it if I had to, but the risk is just too great. If you make a mistake and drop it off in a ravine, it would really suck.
