What about Newfoundland?? Has anyone took the ferry over?
Done it to/from both ports in Newfoundland. The recommendation was to start at the port of Argentia, the ferry for which only runs a few months during the summer. Then ride west across the island to hit Port aux Basques back to Nova Scotia. The idea being that the predominant direction of weather is from west to east. So you're riding against the wind, and bad weather doesn't last as long (as opposed to the rain traveling with you). That recommendation worked perfectly for my wife and I in the summer of 2012.

We did it from Virginia with only 2 weeks off work, so you can do it from Ohio in that amount of time. But, it's a lot of hard slab riding to get it all in with that amount of time. An extra 2 or 3 days would have been nice.

Highly recommend Newfoundland. Truly a spectacular ride.

If you can only get in Nova Scotia, it's also a great ride. My wife and I did that one in 2011. I agree that the Cabot Trail should be ridden on both directions. You miss too much only doing it one way.

Whatever you do, it will be an epic ride. Enjoy, wish I were doing it again this year.

Thanks everyone for all your advice and thoughts. We prefer to camp. What canoe expect along those lines. Tough to find a spot with out reservations? Any good Hostels?

Starting to think after Labor Day would be a better time to miss the crowd and humid weather?

Cheers

Been to Nova Scotia twice and Newfoundland once. All those trips in mid or late summer. Never found either place crowded. Never had a problem finding a B&B or hotel. I'm not a camper, but have been told you can camp anywhere you like in Newfoundland. Find a nice spot on the ocean and setup for the night.
