What a let down. I set off on an adventure today and got about half a mile. The gearbox has decided only to give me 4th, 5th and 6th gears :'( Has anyone else had this problem? It'll be recovered and taken in for repair under warranty but not good for confidence.

The linkage is free, it travels it's full travel and springs back. It just doesn't select gears below 4th. The bike has done less than 2K miles

Sounds like it's still under factory warranty. We will be interested to hear what the problem turns out to be.

What model year? There was a recall on the 2015 for a shift problem that could lock up the box. Simple fix I was told and mine had it done before sale.

I believe it's the 2015 model. It's silver with blue wheel rims and blue fork legs. First registered to the dealer July 2016. I'll ask about the recall when it goes back. Thanks for the heads up.

Sorry to hear that Charlie - I'm sure Steve Linsdell/Charles Marvell at Flitwick Yamaha can sort you out. They need something interesting at this time of the year. Could be the recall issue, but I would have expected this to have been picked up by Blade a while back.

This is a rare problem, if the shift lever pivot is free, so please keep us posted .................. KEN

Don't think we've heard of this failure before, so am also wondering if this is a bike which hadn't had the recall performed. Will appreciate your keeping us informed.

Thanks for the info. My vin No is out of the recall range but the symptons are just like those that had the problem. What I've learnt so far is that if you buy a pre registered bike in the UK the RAC breakdown cover doesn't get transferred to the new owner. Ok I don't have a problem with that but I didn't expect to keep chasing people for the answer. I'm now waiting for my local dealer to contact me regards getting the bike to them. I'll keep you posted.
btw, a friend of mine took delivery of exactly the same model as mine last week, I hope he has more success.

It's fixed ::012::
It turned out to be a corroded pivot bolt. The lever seemed to be moving freely but it didn't quite return to it's resting position. This meant it couldn't select the next gear. Cleaned and lubed it changes gear slicker than it ever did.
Thanks to Flitwick Motorcycles for solving the problem. It's just a shame the Yamaha corporation couldn't run to a few grams of grease when they built the thing!!

Don't feel too bad. A LOT of fellas over the last 5+ years have thought they had shift-gearbox issues.
And many were skeptical when instructed to clean\grease the pivot.

But. :)

99.9% of the time that's the issue.
Many of us now have grease zerts on our pivots.

It's a sticky for a reason.

Don't blame Yammie on this one, as it's maintenance called for in your owners manual. Don't sweat it, we get a lot of new owners write in just like you did. A lot of folks will take it apart and lube the mechanism every oil change.

Notice in the sticky that the rear brake pivot on the other side also needs to be lubed occasionally.
