I've been talking to Larry, the manager at Romney Cycles (where 9 of us got our S10's) and he's offered to put together some kind of event for us. "what kind?" is the question right now!

I'm guessing part of their motivation is to get to know the adv-rider crowd a bit better. I think most or all of us (?) had a pretty good experience with Romney, and at the same time I think they had a good experience with us - and it's a market they want to get into a bit more. Just my assumption...

Anyway, they are willing to put on some kind of event for us. Those of you who've been there will remember the large grassed area in front of the shop, some trees there too. I've suggested that we camp there Friday/Saturday night, and that they put on a BBQ and drinks Saturday evening after we've been out riding for the day. They seem fine with that.

Anyone who's been to WV knows it's fantastic riding country, with plenty of twisties and some great dirt roads. Depending on the number of people and their preferences, we could put together 2 rides for Saturday, one road-oriented and one more dirt, perhaps meeting for lunch?

As far as facilities go, there would be toilets at the shop but no showers. There is however a nice swimming hole by the bridge on the way into town :D. I haven't checked motels or alternative campgrounds yet - I just wanted to throw this out there for discussion first.

No dates yet either, but I'm thinking some time in September - may be getting a little cool after that (especially down at the swimming hole!)

Thoughts?

Great idea! I'd try to get there and like the plan you have outlined.

FWIW, Jennings Randolph Lake (~45 min away) has a Corps of Engineers full facility motorcycle friendly campground.

Interested. It may depend on the date though (always does it seems).

hey guys,

you might remember this idea was initiated by the Yam dealer in Romney, offering camping space and to sponsor the weekend. I was up there last weekend and we decided that the numbers aren't there to warrant them doing something this year, and anyway time is getting short before it gets cold up there.

I floated the idea of doing something bigger next spring - Yam demo truck, rides, vendors, entertainment, technical and/or travel presentations. Something a bit like a BMW rally, but for the rest of us! What do you think? They are keen to do it, but not having had much involvement in the adventure riding scene (most customers are cruisers and sport bikes - no, we don't need a burnout competition or a poker run...) they are looking for guidance. So it's really up to us what we want the event to be.

I'm going to post in the main thread I think, since this has the potential to be an event that people from other regions will want to attend - but let's have your ideas here first.

Oh yeah - they are still willing to let us camp there - they will supply beer and pizza - if we want to do a weekend, or we can pick a campground and have a small get together. Say sometime in the next 4 weeks - who's up for it?

I think planning for next Spring is probably the best bet. It's too late in the game now to get something serious planned, with actual attendance within the next 4 weeks. I know my schedule is complete and utter crap for the next month (weddings, birthdays, who-the-heck knows what else). My vote would be to see about picking a date next Spring once it's warm enough to camp and go for that.

Another good suggestion is to combine this with spklbuk's annual Jennings Randolph trip, which I'd definitely like to show up to next year.

People are already pretty locked into their plans for so near in time, so Spring would sound good.
I've just got a regular suburban place with a 2 car garage, but would be willing to host a tech day or something in the nearer term. Location map is in my profile.

I'm willing to offer up space for a tech day as well.

Guys,

I was just out at Romney Cycles yesterday to have a fresh set of K-60s installed, and to do the o-ring recall. The service manager, Eric, mentioned that he was thinking about June for the get together, and that camping would be available onsite.

As a side note, another big ::026:: for Romney Cycles. I got in and out in about 1 1/2 hours, and had a very good time wandering around the huge showroom, chatting with the salesmen, etc. I will definitely try to keep bringing my business to them.

I saw Larry (the manager) at the DC bike show - they have a conflict June 2 but looking at the last weekend in May instead. Waiting on confirmation of that...

I'm in fingers-crossed territory either way, but will keep hoping.

Hmm, Memorial Day Weekend. Could stretch that out to a 4 day weekend I guess.
