Hi
Rode my S10 for the first time today, engine isn't as quite as I had hoped, sounds like a cam chain rattle, local dealer says "they all sound like that" - do they?

Magnified by metal skid plates. Seems to be a jap bike thing, my wife's K1100LT has the quietest least rattly sounding engine I have ever heard on a bike in 35 years of riding mostly Japanese bikes.

My ST1300 sounded like a sewing machine. I think I like my Tenere Tractor better.

My BMW boxer could get pretty noisy with chain slap. I don't mind the sound of the Tenere at all, especially in the 4-6 K range ::008::

Coming from à Honda xlv 1000 I had the Same idea about the noise of the S10, but my dealer also said it's normal.
After a while it slowly decreased or I'm getting used to it.
Have fun!

It's a "dry" sump motor. It has no oil bath in the bottom to damp vibrations. They sound like a bucket of bolts because all the noises get bounced around and the sump plate is not damped by much oil.

Why did they do this?

The engine is can be mounted 2 Inces lower lowering the COG.
The pistons don't have to wade through oil so it allows better fuel economy than would otherwise be achievable.
If you blow a hole on your "sump" you don't loose all your oil straight away. If you notice it quickly you can fill the hole without all the oil draining.

The downsides is the engine sounds like a bucket of bolts.

Function over NVH is what it is.

The only way to know for sure is to find another one and compare, but the are not quiet motors in that regard.

Once you have answered that, you can go onto asking why the radiator is mounted on the side ;D

^^^^ what he said... ear plugs really quiet things down. I have been around five different Super Tenere and they all sound about the same, which is very noisy as has been stated above by all posters. The mechanic at Yukon Yamaha owns one and we put them side by side, they both sounded about the same amount of noisy. After that I stopped worrying about it ::26:: ::26::

::026:: I was never really fond of my Honda ST1300 exhaust note. Sounded like George Jetson's space car. I am digging the tune my S10 is singing.

I have worked as a Machinist for thirty five years now so you become very a where of the sound of the equipment your operating.

Some of the other list members identified the sounds that can be heard as this engine functions. For me its not the tight mechanical sound that I would prefer to hear but it is what this engine produces.

So lets learn to love it, listen to its shuttle changes as it breaks in. It does smooth out, I am at 6000KM and although it is not much quieter it is wonderfully predictable.

I plan to here that hum under me for thousands of kilometers.

The Tenere has more bolts and the V-Strom whines a bit, but not as bad as a Triumph.

I ran staintunes on the Strom (with the inserts) and it tended to mask the noise a bit.

But the S10 is definitely wins on the empty can sound.

I had the same thing coming from an FJR1300. Like somebody said above about his ST1300, those big 4-in-lines sound like sewing machines, the S10 like a tractor. I realy like my tractor, it has some character ::013::
